More bunk bed inspiration in these beautiful bedrooms designed by @jamiebushco @balanceinteriordesign & @cathiehonginteriors I’m sure the twins will argue about who gets the top bunk but I think bunk beds are the way to go for their shared bedroom 🤍

WOVEN INTO A DORSET RETREAT

A centuries-old Dorset cottage, reimagined by Gemma Tucker of @balanceinteriordesign as a quiet retreat from busy city life.

Natural materials, handmade finishes and a rich mix of texture give the home a warmth and character that feels entirely at home with Coral + Hive. Our Birch Striation and Silver Plaited Jute rugs were selected for the project, bringing their own natural texture to the spaces.

We spoke with Gemma about the project, her approach to interiors and the importance of natural materials, traditional techniques and pieces with provenance.

The power of the mirror. Especially useful to add playfulness in predictable spaces like bathrooms or a downstairs WC.

TIPS on positioning mirrors:

• Make sure your mirror is perfectly proportioned to what you place below it. As you can see in all of these - the width should be approximately 2/3rds of the whatever is underneath it. Be that a basin or a piece of furniture like a console.

• Check what your mirror frames - the image reflected back can become a framed piece of art. Such as outdoor greenery or a reflection of some art hung opposite the mirror. OR a little vignette or corner of the room. Make sure it doesn’t frame a blank wall or an ugly view instead!

Let me know if you have a favourite 1) 2) or 3) ?

We often think about our homes in terms of how they look, but I think we underestimate how much they affect how we feel and how easily our days run.

None of these things will remove the stress from your life, but small changes to your surroundings can take away some of the unnecessary friction.

Hope this helps

Last week we showed you the home office at our Georgian country house project, and now here’s the study in our Dorset cottage renovation.

Located in an unused corner of the hallway, it has the same focus on timeless, natural materials as the rest of the interior, bringing together the contemporary, the antique and the handmade. A gently curved @sohohome desk anchors the space, its dark oak and ridged detailing adding subtle texture and depth. It’s paired with a Model 62 armchair, designed by Niels Otto Møller in 1962, whose classic silhouette blends comfort with character. An antique Persian rug and a moody skyscape (painted by me, Balance founder Gemma) tie the scheme together, creating a space that’s calm yet imbued with warmth and richness.

Trends may come and go, but country style has an enduring appeal. And it’s that timeless look that we’re celebrating in our September issue: the beauty of natural materials, the charm of vintage pieces and the depth that comes with surfaces with a patina.

We designed the entryway of our Dorset cottage project to be homely and inviting, with an elegant simplicity that sets the tone for the interiors as a whole.

Both the settle-style bench and the rustic console table are antiques, with beautiful patinas that trace centuries of use. We commissioned a bespoke box cushion for the bench, choosing a classical linen fabric by @emmaigrant for @odd_limited . Its Delftware-inspired print sets up a gentle contrast with the stripes of the door curtain, while echoing its burgundy and ivory colourway.

Wall lamps and a pair of large Chinese antique vessels repurposed as table lamps form a warm, ambient lighting scheme. The flooring is engineered oak with a aged finish, layered with a @tateanddarby rug woven from hard-wearing yet tactile jute - the perfect combination for a high-traffic area such as this. On the wall, an abstract landscape crafted from antique linen gives a nod the rural setting.
