Fun Fact Friday!

Why choose one favorite place when you can have two?

This week, we’re featuring Debbie Roberts, Communication Specialist in the Teachers College Dean’s Office, who has two favorite destinations for two very different seasons.

Summer: Dale Hollow Lake, on the Kentucky-Tennessee border, where more than 20 years of family vacations have meant boating, swimming, games, and making memories together.

Fall: Folly Beach, South Carolina, a laid-back coastal town Debbie and her husband fell in love with during their October 2019 honeymoon. They returned for their fifth anniversary in 2024, and again in 2025. They love exploring the beach, browsing local shops, visiting nearby Charleston, and finding great local food.

Both places hold special memories, bring family together, and keep them coming back.

Where’s your favorite place to return to again and again?

Four months. New classrooms. A whole new world.

For Ruby Denson, Jamie Johnson Harris, and Sarah Duncan, student teaching in Germany meant navigating unfamiliar classrooms, connecting with students and families living overseas on U.S. military bases, and exploring Europe along the way.

The experience taught them far more than how to lead a classroom. Find out what they discovered about teaching, confidence, and an experience that left a lasting mark on each of them.

Ball State has been awarded a $2.7 million federal grant to strengthen civic education across Indiana!

Ball State’s Center for Economic and Civic Learning (CECL) will lead FORGE, a three-year initiative directed by CECL Director David J. Roof, professor of Educational Studies and the project’s principal investigator.

Teachers College faculty Michael Ndemanu, Rachel Geesa, and Jerrell Cassady will also contribute their expertise as part of the interdisciplinary Ball State team.

The goal? Make high-quality civic learning sustainable in Indiana schools and communities.

Bookstores, doughnuts, city adventures, and beautiful parks. What’s not to love?

For Somanita Kheang, Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Studies, Portland, Oregon, is her favorite place she’s ever visited.

She loves hopping on the MAX light rail to explore the city, stopping at Voodoo Doughnut, and spending hours wandering the shelves at Powell’s City of Books. With great food and easy access to nature, there’s always something new to discover.

Your ideal getaway: exploring a city, getting lost in a bookstore, or heading out into nature?

Fun Fact Friday!

This week, we’re heading to the middle of the Atlantic Ocean to visit the Azores, the favorite place of Andre Bean, Interim Director of Student Success for Teachers College.

The Azores are volcanic islands with some fascinating geothermal features, including natural mud ponds and pools warmed by heat beneath the Earth’s surface.

For Andre, the combination of volcanic landscapes and naturally heated waters made the Azores a memorable place to visit.

Would you take a dip in a naturally heated volcanic pool?

Fun Fact Friday!

Some places make you feel small. Others make you feel completely at peace.

For Kelsey Spurgin, Assistant Professor of Deaf Education in the Department of Special Education, that place is the redwoods and giant sequoias.

Walking among some of the largest trees on Earth fills Kelsey with an immense, quiet joy. Add ferns and clover beneath the trees, and the forest feels almost like a fairy tale.

A favorite place doesn't always have to be somewhere bustling with activity. Sometimes, it's simply a place where you can slow down and take it all in.

Theatre gave her a place to be herself. Now she wants to create that place for her students.
Evvy Kikkert is a sophomore Theatre Education major at Ball State, with minors in American Sign Language and Studio Art.

One of her favorite Ball State experiences so far? Serving as a buddy with the Prism Project, where she watched a young student with autism go from struggling to participate to confidently stepping onstage for a performance.

That experience reinforced something Evvy already believed: the arts should be for everyone.

As a Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship recipient, Evvy is one step closer to bringing that belief into her own classroom.
