One final clean of Trench 5 before we plan this eastern half that contains evidence of the #medieval ditch, platform, and even a socket suggesting there was once a timber structure leading out of the medieval blocked entryway behind the photographer. In previous seasons, we found the postholes up above the trench (second picture). Now we have another at trench level (third picture)! by @bamburghresearchproject

Heather has brought down one of the quadrants (from last season) between the midden and the #medieval platform discovered this season. This area of the trench is now roughly at the same level, so it will be easier to see things in their spatial, and possibly temporal, relativity. by @bamburghresearchproject

Vega is weighing bulk #finds that have been washed, dried, and sorted by material. Even though these are not as obviously special and rare as small finds, accurately recording this material can help us draw stronger conclusions about the activity in those context areas. We have over 3 metric tonnes of material just from the later #medieval in Trench 3, and that helped us understand a few centuries of site use. This medieval material from Trench 5, where we are digging now, will provide lots of data for us to work through in the future. by @bamburghresearchproject

Phil and Minty are removing the baulk that separated the #medieval ditch sondages in the SE corner, and finding no further evidence of the platform of flat stones we think is later medieval. They are in the ditch fill encountering tumbled-in stones. by @bamburghresearchproject

Trench Supervisor Elizabeth works through a context sheet with Arlo. Every area of interest and feature gets a four-digit number; we record the soil colour, texture, any categories of artefacts and materials found, its extent, and draw a sketch of it in situ. This allows us to track areas of occupation, reconstruct the layers of the site, and interpret the trench. #archaeologicalexcavation by @bamburghresearchproject

Director Constance and Declan examine what seems to be a beam slot just inside the #medieval ditch. We have a number of small features like this that could perhaps hint at a palisade or withy (woven, flexible timber) fence on the castle-side of the defences. by @bamburghresearchproject

Jo is revealing more of the #medieval ditch fill in the sondage by the gate to the green. We think the ditch might be curving back towards the sea near our Victorian folly wall. by @bamburghresearchproject

Great turnout for Director Graeme's season round-up, but don't worry we still have a few more days of digging! A version of this talk will be posted as a blog (see link in bio) after the season ends, once everyone gets caught up on sleep and our day jobs. 😅 by @bamburghresearchproject

#Environmentalarchaeology sorting to start another beautiful day! The team is working through an old Trench 3 sample from an early #medieval context. by @bamburghresearchproject

Zack has hit the dolerite bedrock just under his arm. Beyond it, there is a spread of mortar (bottom right) and a number of small stones. We expected the bedrock to drop off quickly before the #medieval ditch, so we've decided to extend this section further to continue to chase the edge of the natural and the human-managed. by @bamburghresearchproject

One final student induction tour! Director Graeme brings all new students around to the old trenches and Inner Ward. This is just overlooking Trench 1, where we found a succession of halls to manage entry to the castle during the early #medieval period. by @bamburghresearchproject

Director Constance and Trench Supervisor Elizabeth layer the plans of Trench 5 onto each other to ensure everything is recorded and it all lines up across the multiple sheets. We do our plans on special waterproof gridded paper at a scale of 1:20. Our trench requires multiple sheets to include all the areas of excavation! #archaeologicalexcavation by @bamburghresearchproject
