BAM is thrilled to announce our next artist in residence project with Breanne Bandur @breannebandur

Breanne has already been working hard over the last few weeks at BAM’s space in the @drinkle3 mall and will conclude at the end of October. She has taken her large scale drawings even larger to fill the walls of the gallery. We are so excited to watch them take shape!

Artist Statement:
Breanne Bandur is an emerging visual artist based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Breanne creates large-scale, abstract, mixed-media drawings on paper that engage in the complexities of formal visual art language, as well as a wide range of material exploration.

In recent works, I have found myself continually returning to explorations of the spaces and places we occupy – as well as those we dream up. The dance between the imagined and real; the push and pull between the private and shared; the harmonies and tensions between interior worlds and exterior worlds; the overlaps - as well as the distinctions - between the realities we find ourselves faced with and what we perceive to be true.

How inconspicuously the ideas, illusions, and fantasies we nurture can become so convincing that they take on realities of their own. How some moments can be so felt that they become tangible, surrounding and swallowing you whole, somehow infiltrating and informing your entire understanding of the world around you. How these dream spaces come to occupy our psyche. Both the dangers and joys of the instances where fantasy slips into reality; the allowances we make, the boundaries we hold firm, and despite our best efforts - the inevitable collision where the imagined and real come together.

The immersive drawing created during this BAM residency comes out of these preoccupations and wonderings. I am grateful to BAM for providing me with the concentrated time and space to experiment with these ideas in such depth.

We got big news: 𝑩𝑨𝑴 𝑰𝑺 𝑴𝑶𝑽𝑰𝑵𝑮!!
Starting in the new year we will be sharing space at @sikwanartistrun centre (formerly known as AKA) at 424 20th St W. This is exciting news for us!!

What does it look like: we will have a dedicated large BAM residency/artist studio space while sharing an exhibition space with Sikwan.

BAM will remain self governing and continue to follow our mandate: to be a platform and opportunity for SK artists to develop their careers. We will still have our own programming and do what we have been doing in our nimble grassroots way but with added resources, security, and sustainability.

BAM has never made a profit. We almost had to shut down last year if it weren’t for community support from the fundraiser. We are currently funded by an @saskarts lite stream grant but after covering rent there’s not much left. This move alleviates us the financial burden of rent so that we can invest more in things that matter: paying and supporting artists better and hopefully paying staff a little bit. Move into a more secure sustainable model; that’s the big picture!

Moving in also puts us in an incredible spot. We will be a part of a buzzin arts culture hub. Under one roof we will have BAM, Sikwan, @pavedarts , @skcommonweal office and @blackflashmag office. We are extremely stoked to share space with these professional arts orgs and workers and to be part of what’s going on.

That’s the news! It will be a new phase for us and we hope it works out!

Thanks everyone for the support. This lil BAM thing started as a project with art school friends that has grown into a community.
Much Love,
Dave by @bamsaskatoon

What a night! Zac Bradley Aiau’s developmental residency recently concluded with a wonderful opportunity to have an open studio aligning with @nuitblancheyxe Eve and @riversdaleartwalk . We had so many people through and it was awesome to share Zac’s practice with the masses.
BAM is really proud and happy to host aspiring emerging artists like Zac. He took his small sketchbook drawing to a massive scale and it turned out really nice. He also started developing a a sculptural practice with flax and wood carving. It’s been a pleasure to work with him and see him develop. Zac’s positive spirit, enthusiasm and drive to grow as an artist is infectious! ((((🤗))))

Thank you to @sikwanartistrun for providing space and support of this project 🙌, @saskarts for our funding ❤️, and @artplacementsupplies for help out artists with supplies 🌈 MUCH LOVE by @bamsaskatoon

The journey of Zac's flax

Artworks this post previews will be on view this Friday, September the 18th at 424 20th st!!!!!
It starts at 5, goes till 9. Come for chats, drinks and cheese, and art of course!!

Several months ago I met a world flax expert at a Saskatchewan Craft Council show named Alvin Ulrich.

Flax is also the name of an unrelated broad flat Grass found in New Zealand. Upon realizing this, I thought engaging in practicing fibre work would be good preparation for the more ambitious, future projects of mine that will exist within the Samoan tradition, such and I'e tōga and chord for hafted adze (or to'i ma'a).

In short, it feels very fulfilling to achieve two goals simultaneously, while producing an artwork.

1)Through my two month process of first learning, then harvesting the whole plant, separating the fibre, selecting only the best long fibres, sectioning, braiding and sculpting with the material, I have grown far more familiar with the feelings of the prairies. I came to know not just the plants appearance, but its smell, taste, sounds and feeling very well. The insects that feed and nest on it. What soil it likes. It brings me to a deeper knowing of the land I live on.

Specifically this crop was grown and picked at Fish Creek, site of Gabriel Dumont's fighting force's victory of the RCMP. This has been of particular interest during the research and making process.

2)Additionally it feels like the beginning of some ancestral connection as I perform activities that would parallel the material arts of my Samoan Aiga. I feel my body changing and adapting to the new kinds of labour and thinking I am subjecting it to. Learning that which is unspoken yet understood.

Thank you for reading and enjoy the captioned slides

BAM is excited to present the work of Zac Bradley Aiau @dumb_ampedrn BAM is proud to promote and be a catalyst for growth for emerging SK artists careers like Zac’s.

Artist statement:
My parents come from the south island of New Zealand, and I am White/ Samoan Chinese. I grew up most of my life across Canada in Toronto and now Saskatoon.
As an artist, I am primarily a drawer.
Drawing is a tool of communication and emotional expression for me, and I’ve drawn since before I can remember. Within this past year, my practice has grown to include wood carving, researching Samoan
Tattoo culture, and working with flax fibre to make sculptures. Learning about these art forms is an important part of my journey connecting to my Samoan family history.
This B.A.M residency has enabled me to focus this research and making over a period of two months into this upcoming mixed media exhibition.
On show will be some milestone works in development. They center around themes of hybrid identity, respect for our Prairie lands and working with local knowledge and natural materials. Personal works which can represent both myth, and a call to action for the further work that needs to be done.

If you could send a message to your future self, what would you ask? What would you say? Sending a message in a paper airplane is a symbol found throughout @zhaojinglustudio’s work. In our current @nuitblancheyxe project we consider what messages we want to send to and hear from the future. Many thanks to @bamsaskatoon for the space to experiment and grow as artists and collaborators. #yxeart #artistinresidence by @bamsaskatoon
