🌾⏰️⁉️
Previews and process of the, too be displayed, Flax creature from Fish Creek
:) here is me with a section of the sculpture!!

The journey of Zac's flax

Artworks this post previews will be on view this Friday, September the 18th at 424 20th st!!!!!
It starts at 5, goes till 9. Come for chats, drinks and cheese, and art of course!!

Several months ago I met a world flax expert at a Saskatchewan Craft Council show named Alvin Ulrich.

Flax is also the name of an unrelated broad flat Grass found in New Zealand. Upon realizing this, I thought engaging in practicing fibre work would be good preparation for the more ambitious, future projects of mine that will exist within the Samoan tradition, such and I'e tōga and chord for hafted adze (or to'i ma'a).

In short, it feels very fulfilling to achieve two goals simultaneously, while producing an artwork.

1)Through my two month process of first learning, then harvesting the whole plant, separating the fibre, selecting only the best long fibres, sectioning, braiding and sculpting with the material, I have grown far more familiar with the feelings of the prairies. I came to know not just the plants appearance, but its smell, taste, sounds and feeling very well. The insects that feed and nest on it. What soil it likes. It brings me to a deeper knowing of the land I live on.

Specifically this crop was grown and picked at Fish Creek, site of Gabriel Dumont's fighting force's victory of the RCMP. This has been of particular interest during the research and making process.

2)Additionally it feels like the beginning of some ancestral connection as I perform activities that would parallel the material arts of my Samoan Aiga. I feel my body changing and adapting to the new kinds of labour and thinking I am subjecting it to. Learning that which is unspoken yet understood.

Thank you for reading and enjoy the captioned slides

Sending messages to the future with @yxe_sandart In preparation for @nuitblancheyxe. Thanks so much for being the first participant in this project ❤️ @yxe_sandart has developed her own unique process of sand painting - check out the prairie wildflowers collection, it was our favorite! Gratitude to the welcoming vendors @drinkle3 - It was our pleasure to open up @bamsaskatoon during the sidewalk sale and meet community members.

Be sure to look for our project on September 19th in front of Sulu on 2nd Avenue ✨

If you could send a message to your future self, what would you ask? What would you say? Sending a message in a paper airplane is a symbol found throughout @zhaojinglustudio’s work. In our current @nuitblancheyxe project we consider what messages we want to send to and hear from the future. Many thanks to @bamsaskatoon for the space to experiment and grow as artists and collaborators. #yxeart #artistinresidence

paraluman in @bamsaskatoon — I’m grateful to have had such a wonderful time doing a three month residency with Bridges Art Movement.

Vision leads to world building, and that world is valuable because it offers an alternative point of view to our perceived normal. As a kid, I danced in the rain, now whenever it pours — I sit with emails and reports. And the self mythology continues…

Thank you to my collaborators during this period @adelineespanolaart @emmazuckyo @abrahams.portfolio @chikakoillustration @respectfulchild. Thank you @saskarts and @canada.council for supporting this period of research and creation.

currently imagining with @emmazuckyo — in progress. Excited to see this in its full glory. Short version shown at my reception in @bamsaskatoon.
