Eight-year-old Ansh Gupta was killed on August 30 after he was allegedly struck and run over by an SUV while crossing the road near Jijamata Garden on St John Baptist Road, Bandra West. The SUV was allegedly driven by 44-year-old entrepreneur Megha Rawal. Eyewitness statements led police to initially invoke Section 105 of the BNS — culpable homicide not amounting to murder — along with other provisions.

August 30: Rawal was arrested following the crash.

September 2: After one day of police custody, Rawal was remanded to 14 days of judicial custody. At the time, police said CCTV footage from the spot was grainy, while her lawyers pointed to the absence of call-data evidence establishing that she was on a call when the crash occurred.

September 7: A sessions court rejected her bail plea while the Section 105 charge remained in place. The court said it could not, at that stage, rule out culpable homicide in view of the allegation that she had been using a cellphone while driving.

September 23: Following further investigation, police dropped the Section 105 charge after finding no evidence that Rawal was using her phone at the time of the crash. Relying on call-data records and other evidence, police filed the chargesheet for causing death by rash or negligent act and related offences under the BNS and Motor Vehicles Act. The prosecution told the magistrate that the offences were bailable.

The Bandra magistrate’s court therefore granted Rawal bail, after she had spent 24 days in custody. She was released on a ₹50,000 personal bond and surety, with provisional cash bail of ₹25,000 permitted for one month.

The court made an important qualification: if Section 105 is invoked again in the future, the September 23 order will not be treated as bail for that offence.

The court also flagged a procedural lapse, noting that police had not furnished a copy of the chargesheet to Ansh’s father, Ravindra Gupta, the first informant. Police were directed to comply with the BNSS requirement, giving him an opportunity to raise objections over the sections dropped and the course of the investigation. taken in Bandra West by @bandrabuzz

A 41-year-old BMC employee was killed and his wife injured after a car allegedly rammed their scooter at the junction of C D Road and 16th Road in Khar (West) on Monday evening, September 28. The car allegedly then hit another scooter, injuring its rider.

According to police, Iyappan Harijan, 41, and his wife Nancy, 37, left their Santacruz (West) home at around 4:15 pm on Monday to shop for a family function. Iyappan was riding the scooter and Nancy was travelling pillion when a white Maruti Ertiga allegedly approached from behind at high speed and rammed their scooter at the Khar junction.

The impact threw Nancy onto the road, while Iyappan fell beneath the car. The Ertiga allegedly then hit another scooter, throwing its rider, Rahul Ghanekar, onto the road. Ghanekar suffered injuries and fractured his arm, police said.

Passers-by pulled Iyappan from beneath the car. He had sustained serious injuries to his head and face and was bleeding. Iyappan and Nancy were taken to Bhabha Hospital in an autorickshaw. Iyappan was admitted but later died during treatment.

Police have registered a case against former Army Brigadier and former MP Sudhir Sitaram Sawant, 71, who was allegedly driving the Ertiga. Sawant, a Khar resident, was reportedly returning home from Dadar when the accident occurred.

Police said their preliminary investigation indicates that Sawant was driving at high speed and in a negligent manner. Since the offences registered carry a punishment of less than two years, police served Sawant a notice instead of arresting him. Police also said his blood pressure rose after the accident and that his family admitted him to hospital for treatment.

Iyappan had been working with the BMC for about a year. He and Nancy lived in Santacruz (West) with their two sons, aged 18 and 17.

Khar police have seized the Ertiga, MH 01 ER 2822, and registered a case under Sections 106(1), 125(a), 125(b), 324(4) and 281 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act. The investigation is underway.

A 28-year-old woman was arrested by Bandra Police after she allegedly created a ruckus in an intoxicated state during the Bandra Fair on September 20 and bit a female police constable while resisting detention.

Police said the incident took place around 9:10 pm outside Mount Carmel Church on Chapel Road, Bandra West. Constable Yashoda Chougule, 37, was allegedly grabbed and bitten on her left arm by KJ Nikki as female officers attempted to take her into custody. Chougule suffered a bleeding injury.

According to the complaint, Nikki and her sister were allegedly creating a disturbance on the road. When female police personnel arrived, Nikki allegedly abused and pushed the officers, refused to enter the police vehicle and resisted detention.

Nikki was subsequently taken to Bandra Police Station and sent for a medical examination along with Chougule. She was produced before the Bandra Court, which remanded her in custody.

The complaint alleges that Nikki disturbed public peace, abused police personnel and obstructed officers from performing their duty. It also separately states that Chougule was allegedly struck on the left arm with a stick before being bitten.

At Pali Pathar on Dr Ambedkar Road, the Prabha Sports Club Sarvajanik Shri Ganesh Utsav Mandal is celebrating its 53rd year of Ganeshotsav, carrying forward a Ganpati identity that has remained familiar to generations of devotees.

For 53 years, the distinctive form and bronze finish of Pali Pathar Cha Raja have remained unchanged. In recent years, the idol has grown to eight feet, while retaining its familiar appearance.

For the past two years, the mandal has used paper-mâché idols, making the shift to an eco-friendly material while preserving the traditional look of Bappa.

The celebrations include daily puja and aarti, music, dance, cultural programmes and interactive activities, with children and devotees coming together throughout the festivities.

After 53 years, the idol may have grown and the material may have changed — but the identity of Pali Pathar Cha Raja remains unchanged. taken in Bandra West by @bandrabuzz

The Jolly Boys Sarvajanik Ganesh Mandal at Bandra Reclamation has marked its 34th year of Ganeshotsav with a striking “Vedas & Puranas” theme, bringing India’s ancient scriptures and stories into the heart of its Ganpati celebration.

The installation features the four Vedas — Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda and Atharvaveda — alongside the Upanishads and Puranas. Its panels also present stories including Ganesha’s birth, Krishna’s Leela, Devi’s victory and Samudra Manthan, giving the pandal a distinctly thematic character.

The mandal has continued its eco-friendly Ganeshotsav tradition for nine years, using paper-mâché, natural materials and organic colours. The celebrations include daily aarti, Mahapuja, bhajans, music, dance and community activities, with children and devotees participating throughout the festivities.

The celebrations will conclude with Ganesh Visarjan on September 20 at 5:30 pm.

What should be a controlled demolition at the Ocean View–Deccan Society redevelopment site in Union Park, Khar West, has raised serious concerns among residents after large pieces of concrete came crashing down as dense clouds of dust spread into the surrounding residential area.

The demolition, carried out with a heavy excavator, is taking place in close proximity to neighbouring homes and balconies. Residents allege that the work commenced on 12 September without adequate safety and pollution-control measures, with the dust and falling debris posing a serious risk to people living nearby.

The situation became particularly alarming when children in a neighbouring building reportedly had a close escape as concrete debris and dust came crashing down in their vicinity.

This is not simply about construction nuisance. When demolition is being carried out metres from occupied homes, the margin for error is measured in lives.

Residents further allege that the work has continued despite a BMC Stop Work Notice.

If a Stop Work Notice has been issued, why is demolition continuing—and who is responsible for enforcing the order?

The questions now lie with developer and the BMC.

Development cannot come at the cost of public safety. Residents should not have to wait for an accident before action is taken.
