Four new stalls were placed on the road, rather than the footpath, directly in front of commercial shops at Kenilworth Plaza, opposite Link Square Mall on Linking Road, Bandra West, from around 2 pm on Friday, 23 October. A shopkeeper at Kenilworth Plaza, who was present when the stalls were being placed, expressed surprise at the development, claiming, “I’m surprised that BMC itself is placing stalls on the road.” The placement of the stalls on a busy shopping stretch raises questions about the use of road space in front of existing businesses. A 78-year-old Bandra West woman has allegedly been cheated of ₹5.85 crore by fraudsters who promised to release nearly ₹4 crore from a fictitious HDFC Bank insurance policy, according to a complaint registered with the West Cyber Police. The alleged fraud began on December 14, 2023, when a caller identifying himself as Vipul Agarwal told her that an HDFC Bank policy, numbered 16054090, was in her name, referring to ₹1,74,512 linked to it. On March 5, 2024, another man, Santosh Mishra, allegedly claimed Agarwal had died and that he had taken over his responsibilities. He told her the policy was worth around ₹4 crore but demanded approximately ₹50 lakh to release the proceeds. Mishra allegedly sent her a WhatsApp identity card bearing the IRDAI logo, his photograph and employee ID ACT00010. On September 5, 2024, Mishra contacted her from a different number, claiming his previous number had been discontinued. He then allegedly introduced a woman named Meenakshi, posing as an HDFC Bank employee, who demanded further payments towards GST and other charges. The woman transferred ₹5,85,74,004 through NEFT and RTGS transactions from her joint IndusInd Bank account to multiple accounts provided by the alleged fraudsters. Yet the demands continued. In June 2026, Mishra allegedly sought another ₹73 lakh for a purported final order to release the policy money. When she said she could not arrange the amount, a man identifying himself as Akash Mittal allegedly contacted her, claimed to be a senior bank official and urged her to pay. The woman eventually approached HDFC Bank to verify the policy and was told that no such policy existed. She reported the fraud through the national cybercrime helpline 1930, submitting five complaint acknowledgement numbers, the purported identity card and authenticated text messages to the authorities. The complainant has lived with her husband in Bandra West since 1993 and runs a tours and travels business. The alleged fraud period cited in the complaint runs from December 14, 2023, to October 7, 2026. The West Cyber Police are investigating the case, including the identities of those involved and the beneficiary accounts.

Bandra’s Durga Puja celebrations take on a distinctive dimension this year as the Notunpalli Sarbojonin Durgotsab Committee marks its 54th year at Patwardhan Park with the theme Shiva to Shakti. The concept unfolds through a gold-themed pandal featuring jute sourced from Assam and bamboo-jute threads. A trishul crowns the entrance, while trishul motifs, damru and rudraksha evoke the symbolism of Shiva. Visitors then pass through a tunnel that leads to Maa Durga, representing Shakti. Beyond the elaborate installation, the celebrations come alive through the soulful aarti, the resonant beats of the traditional dhak and the energy of dhunuchi naach. As the Indian Air Force marks its 94th anniversary today, Bandra remembers Flight Lieutenant Lawrence Frederic “Lawrie” Pereira, one of four young men from St. Stanislaus High School, Bandra, who went on to become IAF fighter pilots. Born in Bandra and commissioned in 1964, Lawrie trained on Gnats and later converted to the Sukhoi-7. But during the 1971 Indo-Pak war, his most dangerous mission took him away from the cockpit. Deployed with an Army brigade in the Shakargarh sector as a Forward Air Controller, Lawrie operated from forward positions, directing close air support and guiding IAF aircraft onto enemy concentrations. His directions were credited with several successful attacks — carried out while he remained exposed to enemy fire. On December 14, 1971, while performing his duty, Lawrie was hit by enemy fire and died at the age of 26. He was posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra for his gallantry, determination and devotion to duty. His final words were: “Tell my little girl to be brave.” More than five decades later, on the IAF’s 94th anniversary, Bandra remembers a son who did not just take the fight to the skies — he took it to the frontline. #BandraBuzz #Bandra #IndianAirForce

A cherished East Indian tradition came alive on the streets of Bandra as the Confraternity of St. Peter’s Church brought the community together to celebrate Agera, the Harvest Feast, in a vibrant expression of faith, thanksgiving and heritage. The celebrations began at the Bazaar Road junction, where a colourful traditional procession set off towards St. Peter’s Church. Women appeared in lugras and East Indian dresses, while the men proudly wore surkas and the distinctive red Koli caps. Carrying the harvest and accompanied by a traditional East Indian band, the procession made its way through the neighbourhood, drawing the attention of passersby. A special highlight was the ceremonial welcome of Fr. Luke Rodrigues, Parish Priest, who was escorted in a traditional horse-drawn carriage from the Bazaar Road junction to St. Peter’s Church, where the Feast Day celebrations continued with devotion and enthusiasm. With its harvest sheaves, traditional attire, music and procession, the celebration offered a vivid glimpse of an East Indian tradition that continues to connect faith, community and cultural heritage across generations and around the world. In Bandra, Agera was not simply observed—it was brought to life on the streets, through music and tradition, and by a community proudly carrying its heritage forward.

A 41-year-old BMC employee was killed and his wife injured after a car allegedly rammed their scooter at the junction of C D Road and 16th Road in Khar (West) on Monday evening, September 28. The car allegedly then hit another scooter, injuring its rider. According to police, Iyappan Harijan, 41, and his wife Nancy, 37, left their Santacruz (West) home at around 4:15 pm on Monday to shop for a family function. Iyappan was riding the scooter and Nancy was travelling pillion when a white Maruti Ertiga allegedly approached from behind at high speed and rammed their scooter at the Khar junction. The impact threw Nancy onto the road, while Iyappan fell beneath the car. The Ertiga allegedly then hit another scooter, throwing its rider, Rahul Ghanekar, onto the road. Ghanekar suffered injuries and fractured his arm, police said. Passers-by pulled Iyappan from beneath the car. He had sustained serious injuries to his head and face and was bleeding. Iyappan and Nancy were taken to Bhabha Hospital in an autorickshaw. Iyappan was admitted but later died during treatment. Police have registered a case against former Army Brigadier and former MP Sudhir Sitaram Sawant, 71, who was allegedly driving the Ertiga. Sawant, a Khar resident, was reportedly returning home from Dadar when the accident occurred. Police said their preliminary investigation indicates that Sawant was driving at high speed and in a negligent manner. Since the offences registered carry a punishment of less than two years, police served Sawant a notice instead of arresting him. Police also said his blood pressure rose after the accident and that his family admitted him to hospital for treatment. Iyappan had been working with the BMC for about a year. He and Nancy lived in Santacruz (West) with their two sons, aged 18 and 17. Khar police have seized the Ertiga, MH 01 ER 2822, and registered a case under Sections 106(1), 125(a), 125(b), 324(4) and 281 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act. The investigation is underway. #BandraBuzz #Accident #Khar #MumbaiPolice
