nearly 7 years ago i released two big band tunes that i’d written and recorded in a room full of great people. in an effort to *streamline some output* 👀 i’ve decided to put them on streaming. in states of tumultuousness it’s very important we remember to cultivate and explore our creative passions and these two tracks are very me and to be honest after all these years i still think they sound fkn cool. ffo carla bley, mingus, don ellis etc.

bandcamp is still king, and in an ideal world i wouldn’t have anything running through world-destroying streaming sites, but sadly sometimes it feels like the only way to reach people.

please follow my new artist pages of ‘jack banjo courtney’ just to be a good pal or whatever, more stuff to come. also someone give me a reason to write more big band charts pls.

saxes - tom smith, rachel kerry, jimmy jefford, jonny ford, evan abell
bones - jacob cooper, joe fenning, joe bristow, simon chorley
tuba - anna carter
trumpets - george jefford, finn bradley, alex ridout, christos stylianides
flugel - jack banjo courtney
piano - david swan
guitar - james maltby
bass - matthew read
drum set - boz martin-jones

recorded and mixed by john duckett

wowz well that was all a bit mental. playing twice at the ground ive been going to since i was small was the most surreal. the first thing i did after getting there was go sit in my seat !

normally i am not the most open and ive never written like this but today this feels like a necessary catharsis. i really struggled leaving my family and getting back on the bus straight after our set! that first hour was particularly painful.

it is sometimes hard to explain the pride this city hands you; you are often wearing this city as such a massive part of your personality because it means so much. and you can often see in people’s eyes that they can’t quite relate. (not said with any grand delusions of superiority, just as a reality of the experience) and i am grateful for this in a way

i am also grateful for the chord changes in ladies room that meant i could play local hero ha thanks @oliviadeano

the shirt was my dad’s prized match worn lee clark top from the last few games of the 1992-93 promotion season - the only shirt my dad didn’t give away during a particularly charitable episode 20 years ago. it was a really special moment when he came to offer it to me to wear for this!

i am so grateful for all the people that i love that were present. so grateful and proud. people making the pilgrimage from round the country purely for the significance of the bloody thing will always be a special thing to think about.

seeing @imogenandtheknife, @brookebentham, @erniethechef etc up there was also really great. joe’s words about immy were beautiful and special and true. she is a superstar!

maybe this seems over the top but thank you to everyone who was part of this xx

currently writing this in a delightful paris garden yet all i really want to be doing is sitting in the free trade with a pint of rivet catcher
