TIFF’s official program also described the film’s “exquisite, handmade costumes” as vividly evoking “the rugged splendour of 10th-century Vietnam.”

Truly…. To hear Cameron say those words as he introduced SPIRIT GUARDIANS: THE LAST SECRET OF THE FIRST EMPEROR / HỘ LINH TRÁNG SĨ at our TIFF Gala Presentation honestly stopped me in my tracks and took my breath away 🥹

First… we made history 🥹 SPIRIT GUARDIANS is the first film from Vietnam ever premiered in TIFF’s GALA Presentation. And then to have my costumes recognized on that stage made every behind the scenes sleepless night spent obsessing crying over details, fabrics, construction, and how to reconstruct a 10th-century world from fragments of forgotten artifacts feel so Seen and completely worth it 🥹

Maybe it’s because I’m the youngest of nine and learned early on that I had to do more to be seen. Maybe it’s because I’m an immigrant and have always felt like the outsider and the underdog. Maybe it’s because I grew up poor and learned to create with whatever I had.

I don’t know. I’m simply built this way—and built for this.

When there is an easy road and then a harder road that is also the right one, I will always choose the harder, right road—no matter how much research, labor, problem-solving, or sacrifice it demands. The work deserves to be right.

Nothing in this film was easy. Every costume was custom-designed for its character and made by hand. Every silhouette, layer, fabric, finish, and detail. I wanted the costumes to serve the story while honoring and carrying forward the centuries-old legacy of Vietnamese craftsmanship.

Being the Costume Designer/Director for the largest production ever in Vietnam is something I’ll forever be proud and honored to be a part of 🥹

So Thankful to BHD Studios for being so supportive & amazing @bichhienngothi Chi Hien & Chi Hanh and our fearless director Nguyễn Phan Quang Bình. We honestly worked miracles, faced obstacles, laughed and cried and most importantly just NEVER STOPPED. And we created something bigger than we thought possible 🥹🥹

So it was so beautiful to get to celebrate with my gorgeous and dedicated Cast (the most Gorgeous & Beautiful inside and out!!) and Crew and to my most Treasured Costume Team and Tailor team… I love you guys so much and i am beyond so thankful GRATEFUL for you whenever i read reviews talking about how authentic, real, and absolutely beautiful the costumes are 🥹🥹 They didnt just happen or get rented overnight, it was through us working tirelessly together and with such joy and passion no matter the time and hardship… I LOVE YOU guys soo much 💖💖

It’s been an honor to be part of a Movie that gets to tell and SHOW our own history and story ❤️

I love what I do. Fiercely.

I love the Obsession. I love figuring out who a character, even down to the details of who they were as a kid. I love being consumed over the silhouette, the fabric and the tiniest details—and then watching it all come alive on an actor. And I can gush about the craft and the making of it ALL day long. 🤗

Thank you so much to @esquirevietnam and to writer Dory Mai for taking the time to have such a thoughtful, in-depth conversation with me about the craft, how my worlds of Fashion Design and Costume Design come together, and what it took to create the costumes for SPIRIT GUARDIANS: THE LAST SECRET OF THE FIRST EMPEROR / HỘ LINH TRÁNG SĨ: BÍ ẨN MỘ VUA ĐINH.

The Đinh Dynasty left us with so little visual history to work from, so this film asked so much of me and my team. We researched, treasure hunted, problem-solved and every costume was built from the ground up. It was difficult, beautiful, exhausting and sometimes completely insane 😂—but it has become one of the most personal projects of my career.

So Much love to Editor-in-Chief @danqdao for this incredible six-page feature and for giving me and my Costumes this kind of space— especially in a men’s magazine! 😍 It truly means sooo much to me 🥹❤️
