For seventeen years, Rana has built power alongside our community--not as a politician, but as an organizer who shows up. When Bangladeshi tenants faced displacement by Innovation Queens, Rana organized with housing advocates, fighting for families being pushed out of neighborhoods they built.

When the pandemic hit, she didn't wait for the government she established Astoria's food bank and mutual aid networks that fed hundreds of Bangladeshi families. Through Malikah, she created the community safety hub on Steinway Street that has trained thousands in self-defense and welcomed immigrant families with nowhere else to turn.

We deeply mourn the tragic loss of our sister, friend, confidant, and co-founder Rokshana Ali.

Rokshana was the heart and soul of the Bangladeshi community in NYC. Deeply principled, she fought for working class communities and united people across all segments of life in New York City. Rokshana was a fighter. A people’s champion. Your favorite organizer’s organizer. No one knew the Bangladeshi community inside and out the way Rokshana did. No one embodied the beautiful tapestry of Bangladeshi life across NYC's five boroughs the way she did. She repped Ozone Park, shared stories about the Lower East Side, and talked shop about how to change the political landscape of Queens.

She contained a noor that was expansive; a light that reflected and bounced off the walls of every room she entered. People laughed with her. Cried with her. Opened up to her in a way no one else could. She made you feel like you belonged with her, even from one conversation. She held people accountable in our community and stood for principles of justice.

You needed a plug into a part of the Bangladeshi community? Go to Rokshana Ali. A magnet of the ideas, BAPP would not be what it is today without Rokshana Ali. Her imprint is forever etched in our DNA.

Rokshana will never be forgotten. Her impact is that of the heart. We will carry that with us in every organizing meeting we enter, every strategy huddle we hold, every celebration where we chuckle over the jovial. We carry that until we pass it onto the next generation of Bangladeshi New Yorkers to carry on these fights.

Rokshana forever changed NY. She leaves a lasting legacy in her resilient daughter, Leah. by @bappnyc

In the last 72 hours, at least two ICE raids occured at La Parada in Woodside, Queens. Bangladeshi Americans for Political Progress condemns these raids.

From community members being abducted at local parks to masked federal agents in unmarked cars ambushing meal distribution lines, ICE terrorizes our neighbors by arresting them without warrants and profiling them based on their race and the language they speak.

By weaponizing community spaces against the very people they exist to serve, ICE terrorizes day laborers and immigrant families regardless of where they are from: Ecuador, Colombia, Bangladesh, Haiti, or anywhere else.

Our coworkers, our neighbors, and the families beside us at school pickup are treated like criminals despite trying to build better lives for themselves.

We call on Governor Hochul to act quickly to protect New Yorkers. Our answer to fear is solidarity. We cannot look away. by @bappnyc

Madison Square Garden's decision to host Mohan Bhagwat, leader of the RSS, a hate-based organization, is an attempt to normalize an ideology that has spent decades terrorizing religious minorities. Bangladeshi Americans for Political Progress stands with the New Yorkers condemning this event.

This city's beauty comes from our refusal to reduce each other to categories: whether we are Bangladeshi, Indian, Pakistani, Muslim, Hindu, Christian, Buddhist, New Yorkers live side by side because we see one another as fully human. An ideology built on stripping that humanity from people because of their faith has no place at one of NYC's beloved landmarks.

Some of the people the RSS has targeted are our neighbors, our coworkers, and our families. They came here to be free of that fear. New York owes them the openness it promised. Hate has no home here! by @bappnyc

Gun violence has struck the Bangladeshi community. We demand justice for Md Yusuf Ali (Raju) and stronger protections for the immigrant workers who keep our city running.

Thank you to @the.japneetsingh for organizing yesterday’s gathering and bringing together leaders from New York’s Black, Sikh, and Bangladeshi communities together in solidarity. #endgunviolence #nojusticenopeace✊🏾 taken in BROWNSVILLE/EAST NY, BROOKLYN by @bappnyc

Mother Language Day celebrates the first sounds we heard, the lullabies of our mothers and fathers.

The language that crossed oceans for us was packed in suitcases that barely closed, and stitched into the lives rebuilt here.

It traces back to 1952, when students in Dhaka were martyred for defending their mother tongue.

Bangla Medium was born on this day a year ago with the hope that our beautiful language could thrive not only in homes, in memories, in history, but in our lives the way we live them today.
So connect with one another in this resilience we share, and let Bangla live out loud between us all.

Happy Mother Language Day from Bangla Medium. taken in Dhaka, Bangladesh by @bappnyc

As we usher in the new year with a new mayor, we also have to acknowledge the harm coming towards the very organizers who made his win possible. Kazi Apa has worked tirelessly over the last several decades, organizing our communties from jackson heights to midwood and beyond. she laid down the work to make BAPP and other organizations possible; the New York Post and others should be ashamed for spewing hate and bigotry during what should be a celebratory moment for Kazi Apa and her family. by @bappnyc

In September, the CCRB substantiated fireable charges against NYPD Officers Cianfrocco and Alongi, yet @newyorkstateag Letitia James has declined to prosecute the officers for their role in the murder of #WinRozario

This is unacceptable! Join us to call on the AG to amend her office’s report to not include pro-police bias and factual inaccuracies.
