Meet Plectranthias raki, a beautiful new perchlet from #mesophotic reefs in the Maldives. The name, raki, roughly means “shy” in the Dhivehi language, and we chose this name because these fish hide quickly when they see us! It’s found on reefs slopes between 100 and 125m depth and I photographed this one at about 110m. This work is another result of our ongoing collaboration with @mmri_maldives @bappunajeeb @pinheiroht @crocha_ca and there is much more to come! #ichthyology #explore taken in Dhaalu Atoll by @bappunajeeb

Meet Chromis abadhah, a new species from the Maldives that our team just described in collaboration with @mmri_maldives! The name abadhah means ‘perpetual’ in Dhivehi (the language of the Maldives), to recognize the @rolex Perpetual Planet initiative, which funded the work that led to this discovery, and because we hope the species and its habitat remain perpetual. Isn’t it a beauty? The oceans truly are a never ending source of wonder and discovery! by @bappunajeeb

Another highlight of our most recent trip to the Maldives was this encounter with a Zebra Shark (Stegostoma tigrinum) at about 50m depth. This species is endangered due to overfishing, so it’s always nice to see one! Video by Mauritius Bell. by @bappunajeeb

It’s always so hard to photograph pairs of butterflyfishes, so I’m happy I got this shot! Chaetodon trifasciatus, the Melon Butterflyfish, photographed in the Maldives with a lot of patience! #PerpetualPlanet taken in Maldives by @bappunajeeb

Boxfishes are always fun to photograph! This is a female Black Boxfish (Ostracion meleagris) about 10cm long that I photographed this week here in the Maldives. Their armor is a bony shell (or carapace) formed of enlarged, thickened scale plates. #ichthyology #PerpetualPlanet by @bappunajeeb

And the deep diving portion of our @rolex #PerpetualPlanet expedition to the Maldives is concluded! One of the biggest highlights were the amazingly healthy and beautiful reefs that @carpediemmaldivescruises took us to, I haven't seen reefs like these in a long time! With many thanks to our partners at @mmri_maldives and much more to come! by @bappunajeeb

Symphysanodontidae is a small family of fishes known as Slope Fishes. They are only found in deep reefs, and very rarely seen. And they are especially hard to photograph because they really don't like our lights. But I got a good shot of one at 120m depth! #PerpetualPlanet taken in Maldives by @bappunajeeb

The Resplendent Anthias (Pseudanthias pulcherrimus) is very common in Maldivian #mesophotic reefs. Like other species in the genus, male and female are very different, so today I took photos of both at about 75m depth. Which do you prefer? Male on the left. #PerpetualPlanet #ichthyology #explore taken in Maldives by @bappunajeeb

The beauty of fishes should be measured in a scale of zero to Emperor. The Emperor Angelfish (Pomacanthus imperator) is without a doubt the epitome of fish beauty! #PerpetualPlanet #ichthyology #maldives taken in Maldives by @bappunajeeb

Meet another beauty from the deep! This is Liopropoma lunulatum, I photographed it at about 115m depth. We've seen it here in the Maldives before, and it's quite common below 100m depth where the water temperature is 18-20C. #PerpetualPlanet #mesophotic #ichthyology taken in Maldives by @bappunajeeb

Safety is always our number 1 priority in our trips and we have to stay close to a chamber. This time we are in the southern Maldives and the great folks at @kandima_maldives gave us a fantastic tour. What an amazing facility, and it’s also open to local communities even in neighboring islands! #PerpetualPlanet taken in Kandima Maldives by @bappunajeeb
