This is Hulhumalé. This is our lagoon. And this is one of the first and last things many diving tourists see of the Maldives.

This is the harbour used by many of the liveaboards operating in the Maldives. Guests arrive here to board their boats and return here at the end of their trips.

And far too often, this is what greets them.

Plastic bottles, bags, packaging, polystyrene and other rubbish floating and accumulating along the harbour and lagoon.

We sell the Maldives to the world as a pristine ocean destination. Crystal-clear water. Coral reefs. Mantas. Sharks. Incredible marine life.

Then we bring our guests to a harbour surrounded by trash.

This isn't hidden somewhere out of sight. Tourists, dive crews, boat operators and everyone using this harbour see it.

Plastic pollution doesn't disappear because we stop looking at it. Once it enters the ocean, it can spread, break down into smaller pieces and become part of the marine environment we depend on.

We can run clean-up campaigns. We can talk about sustainability. We can make environmental pledges.

But surely the most basic starting point is this:

Keep our own lagoons and harbours clean.

The Maldives depends on the ocean. Our tourism industry depends on the ocean. Our image around the world depends on the ocean.

We should not be showing visitors paradise in the brochures and this when they arrive.

During my 50-hour dive, I jokingly held up a sign that said “I want a burger.” 🍔
A few hours later, the Maldives National Defence Force actually deliverer burgers to the support vessel. And the current Vice Chief of Defence dove down himself to give me one! That was a real surprise! He definitely made history with that delivery.

Talk about meals ready to dive!

Scrolling thru social media from 6m below during my 50-hour Asian record dive in Maldives, I stayed connected with a Valtamer tablet and answered questions live from underwater.

Excited to share that the documentary ‘50 Hours Underwater’ will have a special screening in Switzerland 🇨🇭 on 8th September 2025 at UrbanSurf Zurich!”

"Fifty hours underwater. Alone with my breath, my thoughts, and the weight of why I was there."

This image is from Ocean 6|50, a dive that became more than just an Asian record.
It became a test of everything I had. My body. My mind. My reason for doing this.

For 50 hours, I stayed submerged at 6 meters. The pressure didn’t just come from the water above me, it came from within. Every second, I thought about why I was down there: for the ocean that raised me, for the hope we still have, and for the stories that need to be told before it’s too late.

Now, the documentary is being released, the film will tell the story behind the exhaustion, the doubt, the silence. And the incredible support that carried me through.

This isn’t just a film about diving.
It’s about purpose. About what it means to hold on. To fight for something bigger than yourself.
It’s about our oceans. It’s about us.

A story that matters

Who’s got Hope for Reefs?! 🪸🧡

Launched in 2016, the Hope for Reefs Initiative has been working to reverse the rapid decline of coral reefs around the world 🗺️

Coral reefs are critical ecosystems that support 25% of all life in the ocean - and the livelihoods of half a billion humans 🪸🎣⚓️

I’m grateful for my collaboration with the Academy, and their partners, to help conduct the most comprehensive reef surveys to date, from heavily impacted shallow reefs to the largely unexplored mesophotic “twilight zone” 🐠🪸

A flicker of flame in the blue — the Purple Fire Goby glides with quiet confidence, dressed in neon as if the reef itself whispered it into existence. Bold, delicate, and utterly mesmerizing....oh and Purple lipstick rocks!

In 2022, somewhere between hour 30 and 40 of my 50-hour underwater dive, I held up a little board that read “I WANT A BURGER.” That moment became a meme (thanks @divewithlaura for immortalizing my craving!)—me underwater dreaming of surface-level joys.

A few days ago—finally met the legend behind the meme and shared that long-awaited burger together!

Funny how one random moment underwater sparked a hilarious meme, and that meme led to a real-life friendship. Sometimes, it's not the plan, but the humour, curiosity, and shared madness that creates the best bonds.

Stay weird. Dive Crazy.

And just like that, we’ve concluded the first round of our fieldwork in the Maldives. Grateful to have learnt so much from both the Australian Institute of Marine Science and the Maldives Marine Research Institute and looking forward to working together further in the coming years! We’ve set up the ReefSeed system and conducted checks on coral fecundity around the North and South Male atoll but there’s so much more work to be done for us to shed light on the reproductive patterns of Maldivian corals. These are some candid shots of the team (birds included) throughout an unforgettable month.

Meet Plectranthias raki, a beautiful new perchlet from #mesophotic reefs in the Maldives. The name, raki, roughly means “shy” in the Dhivehi language, and we chose this name because these fish hide quickly when they see us! It’s found on reefs slopes between 100 and 125m depth and I photographed this one at about 110m. This work is another result of our ongoing collaboration with @mmri_maldives @bappunajeeb @pinheiroht @crocha_ca and there is much more to come! #ichthyology #explore
