On August 11, Taniya Hashimoto and William Tsukuda of NoNations @no_nations_ will join us for an intimate conversation exploring their immersive approach to music and sound. Each will select three or four records that, for them, elaborate the idea of Sekaikan, or world building in music. Expect a musical reverie that explores tone, rhythm and texture.
This listening experience is strictly a ticketed event, so please do book ahead (link in bio).

This was Reading Room x Filter 🍵📖🎶

Reading Room has always been about bringing people together through a shared love of reading and it will always be an open, welcoming and connecting space.

Two weeks ago we gathered at the beautiful @bar.neiro, tucked in Kreuzberg’s back yards, though the mood was heavier than usual after the shocking and heartbreaking news that broke the night before. We felt it was important to open our doors regardless, offering comfort and community to anyone who wanted to sit with others.

For this collaborative edition, Annabel from @yoshien welcomed everyone with a lovely cold-brew tea, while @heikoxhoffmann, founder of @filter.sessions, prepared the music for the afternoon. We settled into our books for a session of silent reading, accompanied by two beautiful albums: Through the Looking Glass by Midori Takada and Space 1.8 by Nala Sinephro. 🩵

With a smaller group than usual and the dim and rainy Summer afternoon, this edition felt especially intimate. Throughout the silent reading, we tasted a selection of @yoshien’s Japanese and Chinese teas while listening to Heiko’s music picks through Bar Neiro’s beautiful vintage Altec speakers. The sound was so clear, which made the music feel much more present than in our usual set-ups.

It was a quiet, peaceful afternoon we’re grateful to have shared with each other. Thank you to everyone who joined us, until next time.

🌼 Thanks so much again @bar.neiro, @heikoxhoffmann, @itsbella and @yoshien for this beautiful collab! by @bar.neiro

Throughout the afternoon, he will soundtrack the space with a selection of ambient music, accompanying both the silent reading session and the time afterward.

📣 RSVP opens soon via our Substack. If you haven’t subscribed to our newsletter yet, make sure to sign up through the link in our bio.

Bar Neiro isn’t open to the public again just yet - but we expect to get the green light to reopen soon. Tonight, we held a second private listening event featuring the beautiful and atmospheric LP Laputa by pioneering Japanese electronic producer Susumu Yokota. The album is part of a new double box set from Lo Recordings, featuring 14 records originally released on Yokota’s own Skintone label.

Thanks to everyone who came along, and to our friend Lisa Zhang for selecting the Taiwanese oolong tea. Apologies to those whom we could not accommodate this time - we hope to see you soon when we resume normal operations.

Stay tuned for more listening events and our reopening date to be announced soon.

Bar Neiro isn’t open to the public again just yet - but we expect to get the green light to reopen soon. In the meantime, we’re holding two private listening events, featuring ambient albums by pioneering Japanese electronic producer Susumu Yokota: Laputa and Image 1983-1998. These remastered albums are part of a new double box set from @lorecordings featuring 14 records originally released on Yokota’s own Skintone label.

Sound fragments swirl among Laputa’s resonant textures. The Miyazaki film of the same name, inspired by 1940’s science fiction artist Tetsuji Fukushima, likely had an influence on this LP  – Yokota enjoyed the film maker’s use of emotional nuance.  Image 1983–1998 is a delicate and unadorned sequence of organ, guitar and tape studies. In describing his goal when making music, he said “I’m trying to achieve that beautiful thing. There is always fear, rage, and ugliness existing behind beauty… I would like to express even one’s hidden emotion.”

The events will feature incense selected and handmade by @ryoko.berlin , two multidisciplinary creatives who explore the sensory world through immersive scent-scape installations, and olfactory creations at their boutique in Neukölln. Their approach emphasises the use of natural materials from around the world, researching the intersections between human civilisations, botanical cultures, and the Earth’s memory as a living witness.

We will also be offering a tasting of Taiwanese and Chinese teas, selected by our friend Lisa Zhang.

Our guestlist for these events is already full, but we’ll hold another Laputa listening event in January, so drop us a line if you’d like to come along. @analoguefoundation

Join us tomorrow evening (Thursday) at Zenner Saal for another evening of intimate, spatial listening. Analogue Foundation is honoured to host @lyra.pramuk , whose devotional and boundary-shifting music connects voice, electronics, ritual, and care. Her latest album Hymnal deepens her journey into sacred sound and collective resonance.

For this Analogue Foundation Live Series event, Pramuk invites us into a world where the human voice is not merely sung but sculpted, and where music becomes a ritual of collective renewal, drawing on themes of ecology, identity and transformation. Lyra will be joined by Islam El-Ghazouly, who will perform Sufi whirling as a form of physically active meditation and ritualistic dance.

Opening the live program is Lara Dâmaso & Alex Lazaro — a duo whose recent performance at Biennale Son fused voice, transducers, and percussion in a delicate, resonant conversation. The night begins with sets by Akïï, a rising Italian experimental artist.

As always, the Saal becomes an intimate listening space—one where you’re invited to sit, stand, or lie down, and simply be with the sound.

Tomorrow! We hope you’ll join us for the next listening concert in our series: Analogue Foundation present Eliza McCarthy, Patrick Higgins and Gizem Öz. November 21, 7 PM @zenner.berlin

Heralded as a “formidable concert music composer” (Boston Globe), “one of the most gifted guitarists working today” (The Quietus), and “one of the prime movers of the avant-garde” (The New Yorker), NYC sound artist Patrick Higgins bridges traditions including baroque chamber music, contemporary noise, electronics and 20th century minimalism. Patrick currently records for the Other People label, and is the founding member of AEAEA, a new duo project with electronic musician Nicolás Jaar.

Eliza McCarthy, the celebrated pianist known for her emotive interpretations, has shared a profound musical journey with composer Mica Levi. Together, they’ve ventured into intricate soundscapes, exploring Mica’s unique, genre-defying scores that blend classical elements with experimental undertones.

Electronic music composer and sound artist Gizem Öz designs sensory environments aimed at challenging perceptions and facilitating new experiences. Through a combination of processed field recordings and electroacoustic instruments, she constructs intricate auditory landscapes that provoke contemplation and introspection.

Eliza’s performances of Mica’s work are intimate dialogues with the music, bringing out both its fragility and raw intensity.

Hi everyone, we have to close our doors to the public temporarily for building maintenance.
We hope to be back in time for your end-of-year holiday celebrations!

In the meantime, we will hold some community listening events, so please do stay tuned.

In just a few days, on November 21 at the historic Zenner Saal in Treptower Park, Berlin, we will present our third listening concert, this time featuring a live performance by British pianist Eliza McCarthy @e.j.mcc , performing piano
works by acclaimed composer Mica Levi from Slow Dark Green Murky Waterfall. McCarthy’s interpretations of Levi’s minimalist and atmospheric compositions create a deeply contemplative listening experience. Also performing is American composer and guitarist Patrick Higgins, known for his classical, electronic, and experimental soundscapes. Tickets available via RA and DICE. @zenner.berlin
