15th October is the Day of Teatro de las Oprimidas
Join Madalena-Berlin on October 17 to celebrate in the way we know best: through Forum Theatre. We’ll present SCHMERZ IST NORMAL. Come celebrate with us! 🎭

Teatro de las Oprimidas emerged from the urgent need to create theatrical representations that do not blame oppressed people for the oppression they face, and that move beyond individualistic ways of staging conflict.

It is an aesthetic and political investigation that brings social structures into the performance and into dialogue with the audience.

Teatro de las Oprimidas promotes an aesthetic inquiry into injustices shaped by the intersections of gender, race and class. It examines how socialization and the construction of gender shape social roles, making visible the mechanisms of oppression that sustain patriarchy and exploring alternatives to transform this reality.

Teatro de las Oprimidas is a methodology with specific proposals for making theatre, open to everyone committed to overcoming patriarchy, making space for other ways of being, and building a project of social transformation that includes diverse subjectivities.

Above all, it opens up a way of thinking about Feminist Aesthetics.

@barbara.kuringa , a leading methodological reference for the Ma(g)dalena International Network, is an artist, writer, teacher and the artistic director of @kuringa_berlin and @madalena.berlin.

Her book Teatro de las Oprimidas traces the development of feminist aesthetics among artist-activists from diverse regions, nations and cultures, and presents the political history of the Network @redmagdalenasinternacional

Bárbara, today we celebrate your vision, your teaching and all the work you set in motion.

Thank you for all that you’ve given us and continue to give.

Long life to Teatro de las Oprimidas!

May keep moving us, finding strength, resistance and possibilities through Teatro de las Oprimidas.

Happy birthday, Bárbara! 🎂

What happens when women are in pain and no one believes them?

When their complaints are dismissed as exaggeration?

When prejudice determines whose pain is taken seriously and whose is ignored?

The Gender Pain Gap is not an individual problem. It reflects deeply rooted power structures in our society.

On October 17, Madalena Berlin brings this issue to the stage.

SONHA PRETA (DREAM BLACK WOMAN) — @coletivomadalenaanastacia

Sonha Preta was created after the tragic outcome of a police operation in the Penha neighbourhood of Rio de Janeiro in October 2025, which left 120 people dead.

Faced with this shocking event and profound collective grief, the artists of Coletivo Madalena Anastácia decided that the story needed to be told from the perspective of Black mothers. Their voices are placed at the centre of the performance, opening a dialogue about racism, state violence, grief and collective responsibility.

Founded in Rio de Janeiro in 2015 and led by Bárbara Santos, Coletivo Madalena Anastácia is composed exclusively of Black women. Through artistic production and Teatro das Oprimidas, the collective investigates the oppressions affecting Black women from an anti-racist and feminist perspective. It is part of the Ma(g)dalena International Network and associated with the Centro de Teatro do Oprimido in Rio de Janeiro.

Through Forum Theatre, the audience is invited not only to witness the story, but to take part in the reflection and collectively search for alternatives.

FEAR MACHINE

What happens when fear becomes a political tool?

FEAR MACHINE explores the rising popularity of right-wing populism in Europe and its concrete consequences for migrants — and for everyone committed to democracy.

Through Forum Theatre, the performance invites the audience to intervene, challenge the mechanisms of fear and exclusion, and collectively explore strategies of resistance and solidarity.
