⭐ If you are a current / former employee, an institutional partner or an artist from the Global Ethnic Majority who has worked with the Barbican, and you have experienced or witnessed discrimination (across intersections) at the institution - we want to record your stories. These will be published anonymously. LINK TO DO THIS IS IN OUR BIO!

If you have any questions please drop us an email or DM us, we want this to be an inclusive process for everyone who wants to contribute.

*We will only publish stories from people who identify as people of Global Ethnic Majorities.

⭐ This edition of the book will be sent to libraries and archives to be kept for posterity, to record everything that happened and to provide an alternative narrative of institutional power and racism in the cultural sector. The second edition will contain new stories and an update to the timeline to show all the solidarity that artists, partners and the public have shown and record how we are collectively divesting from toxic institutions. We will also include receipts of all the Barbican's f*ck ups that have happened since we released the first Barbican Stories edition in June #gaslightingcontinues

💰We have successfully fundraised enough to cover the full second print run of the book thanks to members of the public, artists, organisations and unions who have contributed to our project. Thank you for your solidarity!

☠️ Whilst leaders at the Barbican continue to deny the institution’s racism problem and provide performative, cosmetic changes - we will ensure that we record as much as we can.

🔥This history will not be forgotten:
Barbican Stories is a radical archiving project.

Will leaders at the @barbicancentre be able to take the opportunity to do truly groundbreaking, sector-leading work? OR will they lack the imagination to think in this way, continue to view this time as a threat to their own power; expediting the institution’s disintegration and death by irrelevance? ... ☠️

Good morning good morning, it’s your friendly #Mondaysarebrutal PSA: The @barbicancentre continues to haemorrhage more of its workforce. Here are just SOME of the jobs being vacated…

How will the Barbican be hiring? 🤷🏼
How will the people left behind be supported? 🤷🏽‍♂️

If you’re looking for some work at the Barbican, have a read of @barbicanstories to prepare yourself for the work culture you’ll be entering: www.barbicanstories.com 🤺🥷🧯

Might be up your alley if you’re into white supremacy.

🔥 HOT NEW LEAK: extracts from an all-staff email from John Barradell, Town Clerk and Chief Exec of City of London (founder and principal funder of @barbicancentre). Highlights underlined in red... ooooff where to start? 🤔
The gaslighting?
The pathetic lack of self awareness?
The ‘I’m running out of patience here’ vibes? 😲

Hey JB, GET A GRIP. This one’s going straight into the archive. You may never understand the violence and ignorance of your email, but we do and will make sure that it's a part of your legacy.

(Statement begins on slide 4)

The Managing Director position is now being shared by a recent hire (who’s been promoted so now even more powerful than he was before) who was formally introduced to the workforce as “not your usual Oxbridge graduate because he dropped out of school” and the Chief Operating & Financial Officer who has worked at the Barbican for TWENTY TWO YEARS.

The people that have been put in charge have little to no track record of actually implementing any radical anti-racism plans effectively, nor have they shown commitment to supporting the staff at the centre through what has been an incredibly difficult period. They have stepped back, dug their heels in and started a performance of anti-racism using emails, public statements and independent reviews as props. This makes Nick Kenyon’s resignation feel like a way to ‘perform’ change without actually changing anything. Especially as Nick never took any significant accountability and pretty much pretended that stepping down at that moment was part of a long-term plan and not driven at all by Barbican Stories. What does this show? Nothing except that people in power can be publicly called out for racism and then go land cushy jobs as critics at the Telegraph… if that’s not proof of a broken system we don’t know what is.

Institutional racism at @barbicancentre continues, wearing a different suit. The creation and employment of new director roles (Director of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Director of Marketing and Communications) is more of the same assertion of hierarchy to a structural problem. Progress continues to be slow, fractured and unsupported. The weekly updates on a 10 Point Action Plan leave a paper trail of progress and waste our time, whilst nothing is changed on the ground.

There are particular Heads of Department and Directors directly responsible for the violence recorded in Barbican Stories but who remain in their high power jobs whilst employees from the Global Ethnic Majority have to just 'get on with it'. Artists and partners are boycotting the Barbican and employees are leaving in droves.

What does all of this say about the work the Barbican is doing?

The ship is sinking and people are GETTING THE FUCK OUT ✌🏼🚣🏼‍♀️🌊

Here are just SOME of the jobs that have been or are being vacated since the publishing of Barbican Stories…

Will these recruitments be publicly advertised? Or just filled with more directors’ mates 👀?

Has Barbican learnt anything about responsible and equitable recruitment after the Director of Arts and Learning trainwreck? PROBABLY NOT! Ugh - a mess.

Can the institution decompose and eat itself at the same time? 🤷🏻‍♀️ #chompchompbitch

If you know of more jobs being abandoned, let us know in the comments or DM us! 🦈 taken in Barbican Centre by @barbicanstories

Lmao (don’t know whether to 😹or😭)- the chair of the @barbicancentre board gaslighting everyone about gaslighting… or is it (white)mansplaining discrimination?

Why is this giving us annoying men at a bar trying to explain stocks vibes?

The content for the next book generates itself 🤢 #barbicanstories taken in Barbican Centre by @barbicanstories

📣 Calling ALL current and former workers + artists at the Barbican, we’re looking at you too white allies (we know you know about the Barbican’s racism and many of you been marginalised by the Barbican’s systems as well)!

The external review is a GO and a procedure has been communicated about how YOU can take part.

There are clearly some issues and glossed over bits here. One of our MAIN concerns is: How will participants be ACTIVELY supported during this process of reliving trauma and compensated for this emotional labour? 🧐

—

Some points about how you can take part:

“The [Lewis Silkin LLP] review team will be led by Partner, Shalina Crossley…

Over the coming weeks, Shalina and her team will be conducting a series of interviews with Barbican Centre staff. Anyone who has information to share will be able to contact the review team directly… via email: barbican-investigation@lewissilkin.com. This email account is only accessible by the review team. You can also use the email address above to send a written account of your experiences, or to suggest people that you think the review team should speak to.”

—

We want to let you know so you can make your own decision as to whether you want to take part or not. We have no confidence that the City of London or the Barbican would communicate this procedure publicly. We also have no confidence that they will provide the care necessary for people to open up about their experiences with racism and discrimination.

We’re fairly certain that if this information stayed within the concrete walls of the institution, the review will come back inconclusive because there are so few current Barbican employees from global ethnic majorities and the institution operates on a culture of secrecy and fear.

Slide through to see what "accountability" looks like 🙄 - one more for the record.

It takes a whole MONTH for Sutton Foster to publicly acknowledge the racist video of her performing “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” in the style of a Black performer to a laughing audience. And when she does, it's part of a PROMO INTERVIEW for the @trafalgarent @barbicancentre musical @anythinggoesuk 🤢 There is no actual mention of racism in the apology... nor is there any acknowledgement of why what she did was bad.

"I'm sorry you feel that way" doesn't cut it anymore #whiteprivilege #zerostars #bway4blm
