18.4.2026 & 10.5.2026 * The exhibition of works by Beatriz González (16 November 1932 - 9 January 2026), a Colombian painter, sculptor, critic, curator, and art historian, currently hosted at Barbican Gallery @barbicanstories is for me one of the most complex and layered exhibitions by a solo artist that I’ve seen for a while. The everyday of domestic existence lived in the shadows (and regardless of) the grand narratives of power and the violence of histories of capital and the resulting incursions upon everyday life.

There are so many nuanced historical references throughout the works on display (individually and as clusters of works in the different media). The human ever-present, in spite of the strangeness and the charades of the systems they occupy. Wonderful to read Beatriz González’s artworks in the context of the archival material. Particularly fascinating for me are the photographs that reveal the utilitarian nature of Gonzalez’s artworks as depicted in their domestic setting - one as pictured in this post (image number 6) dating back to *1975*. It’s a beautiful and important exhibition which I’m so glad to have been able to spend time with. Huge congratulations to the exhibition curator Lotte Johnson @lotterebjohnson and to all the Barbican Gallery team.

Today is the final day of the exhibition - if in London and you’ve not visited yet, I’d certainly recommend it. It’s not the same of course as experiencing art in person, but if you’re unable to visit the show, the accompanying exhibition catalogue is also fantastic.

[Will try and add titles to the works later.]

Bring ‘Mi Gyals’ to life!

We’re raising funds to support Yellow Box Theatre and the production of the important story Mi Gyals. This play explores the lives of three young women, their dreams, cultures, challenges, and the strength found in friendship and family.

Watch this short clip of the dinner scene (content copyrighted and owned by the authors of the play: Paloma Davies, Roshi Thevasegayam, Natasha Stiven and Ruth Allier-Dugdale).

These are stories about people, their lives, and experiences, stories that challenge us, connect us, and inspire us to see real change for women and girls.

Help us bring Mi Gyals to life as a radio play. Every donation helps make this vital storytelling possible.

Finally watched My Father’s Shadow and I’m still sitting with it.

A slow burn. Intentional. Beautifully shot. The kind of story that stays with you long after the credits roll.

Nigerian storytelling on a global stage 🇳🇬✨

Featuring the brilliant minds behind it:

Flowers to @sopedirisu for a performance that carried so much weight in the silences. And to the @egbobrothers, @iammarvellous_e and @iamgodwin_e , your honesty and depth stayed with me long after the film ended. 🌺

Lost in the layers of brutalist dreams 🏢✨

Standing on the edge of concrete poetry, where every balcony tells a different story.

The Barbican never fails to feel like stepping into a sci-fi film from the 70s.

Throughout April, in celebration of @mustafa_sheta and Zakaria Zubeidi’s release, and to honour the 14th anniversary of Juliano Mer Khamis’s murder, we amplify inspirational acts of cultural resistance from across the globe.

As genocide, invasions and attacks on artists escalate, we hope these acts of creativity and defiance will ignite others, fueling the cultural intifada.

📸 OCCUPYING CULTURAL SPACE IN LONDON: In March 2024 artists, activists, cultural workers @parentsforpalestine occupied the #Barbican organising a gorilla arts festival in protest of their censorship of Palestinian and pro-Palestinian artists

THE CULTURAL INTIFADA is a digital archive and toolbox for cultural resistance and action. From demands against cultural genocide, testimonies from artists under attack, learning resources, a creative toolbox and a guide for performance protest - there is something for everyone.

Mix & Match is all about telling a story — without locking it in time.
Take Brutalism, for example. Raw, radical, once pushed aside… now back in the spotlight for its bold spirit and ability to reinvent itself.
We played with it at the iconic Barbican in London, mixing it up with unexpected contrasts.

Here are 5 bold duos we tested. Which one speaks to you? 👇

1️⃣ Brutalism x 70s Boho 🌿🧡
Warm woods, burnt orange, shag textures — peace & love meets concrete.

2️⃣ Brutalism x 80s–90s Modernism 🔵🟢
Electric colors, chrome, bold geometry — graphic and futuristic.

3️⃣ Brutalism x Contemporary ⚫⚪
Minimalist lines, raw elegance — pure contrast, pure design.

4️⃣ Brutalism x 70s Pop 🔴🟡
Vibrant primaries, plexiglass, Panton vibes — a psychedelic twist.

5️⃣ Brutalism x Pastel Softness 🌸🤍
Powder pinks, soft whites, neon pops — punk meets poetry.

🎯 Which one’s your fave? Drop your pick below 👇

I feel like the Barbican is one of those places in London that causes just as much of a divide as the Arsenal/ Tottenham rivalry..
You either love it, or hate it?
It’s this radical, utopian, Brutalist world where the towers stand at over 100 metres tall, yet inside offers a level of serenity with the art centre, conservatory and gallery amongst other things.
Plus tickets to the conservatory are free - just book a time slot in advance!
So what do we think of the Barbican? Well in my opinion, it’s a hit. 🙏🏻💯
