TW: Content about sexual assault

On the same day that staff at local domestic violence and sexual assault programs across Massachusetts were learning that their funding was being cut by 25% to 40%, a CNN investigation exposed the "online rape academy," an online subculture dedicated to the systematic education of men on how to use substances to facilitate sexual assault. Earlier in the week, two members of Congress resigned due to sexual assault allegations. Extensive media coverage has illuminated the extent of sexual violence, but it has not led to necessary change.

In fact, a major funding source designed to support survivors in Massachusetts is being decimated because of actions of the federal government. The Massachusetts Office of Victim Assistance (MOVA), which receives funding through the Federal Victims of Crime Act, has recently informed our community of domestic violence (DV) and sexual violence (SV) agencies of drastic cuts to federal funding for the upcoming fiscal year, starting July 1, 2026.

Read about how this drastically impacts the work of our local SA & DV services in our joint statement with Casa Myrna Vasquez, Health Imperatives, and Transition House through the link in our bio. by @barccofficial

BARCC's hotline exists to help survivors feel supported immediately and find the next steps they need to move forward. Hotline volunteers are required to take an extensive, 40-hour rape crisis counselor training that prepares them to meet people in all stages of their experience, from the immediate crisis after an assault, to years into the healing process.

[Content warning: suicide]

We understand that there can be significant risks when emergency services are called to support individuals in crisis. This is why at BARCC, we do not call 911 without consent, unless the person shares they will take action to end their life imminently and they are unable to engage in safety planning. We explain this policy at the beginning of each conversation so callers always have a choice to share–or not share–what they are going through.
We're here for you. Call our 24-7 hotline at 800-841-8371 or chat 9 a.m.–11 p.m.

[Image Description:
1: What to expect when you call the hotline. Swipe to learn.
2: A friendly, nonjudgmental person, who believes you and hears you will answer your call.
3: We’ll ask some questions to learn more about what would help you in this exact moment.
4: We’ll share ideas and options about what to do next, but how to move forward is your choice.
5: What won’t happen when you call BARCC… Content Warning: Suicide, Slide 8.
6: We will NOT share your information with anyone unless you provide your consent.
7: You do NOT have to share any information you don’t want to. You can call our hotline completely anonymously by choosing option 2 in the main menu or by using our web chat barcc.org/chat.
8: We will NOT call 911 unless you share that you will take action to end your life and you are unable to engage in safety planning. At the start of each call, we tell callers that sharing this kind of information may result in a call to 911. Callers always have a choice to share - or not share - what they’re going through.
9: Let’s recap. We believe you. We’re here to help give you options. We value your privacy and confidentiality. Your safety is important.

Last week I spoke at the Cornell Jane Doe Solidarity Rally on Boston Common organized by @massnow @victimrightslaw @barccofficial @jane.doe.inc @protecttransfutures and others. I condemned what the Cornell 7 and their 57 enablers in the group chat did to Jane Doe at the Chi Phi frat house — and I also condemned the failures of Cornell University and the criminal legal system in responding to her attackers. Jane Doe made a very clear statement during the Title IX process that she was 100% confident she was raped, and yet that process and those institutions failed her. I talked about some of what we’ve done on Beacon Hill to support survivors — and I joined with rally organizers in calling on the legislature to do more — by increasing state funding for sexual and domestic violence services, investing in prevention and response mechanisms, and removing systemic barriers preventing survivors from accessing support. In particular, the state government should fund and require mandatory consent education, from early elementary through high school and also pass the Healthy Youth Act. by @barccofficial

Due to forecasted rain tomorrow, the Domestic Violence Vigil has been rescheduled for the rain date: Tuesday, October 20.

The Boston Area Rape Crisis Center (BARCC) will be joining the City of Cambridge for the Domestic Violence Vigil in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The Vigil will honor those we have lost to domestic violence this year and bring our community together to raise awareness and take action toward ending domestic violence.

Please join us on Tuesday, October 20, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Cambridge City Hall, located at 795 Massachusetts Avenue.

The Silent Witness Exhibit will also be on display throughout the day as a tribute to those who have lost their lives to domestic violence. The exhibit features life-size silhouettes representing victims, with each display sharing a story and honoring the individual behind it. The exhibit offers an opportunity to reflect on the lives impacted by domestic violence and the importance of continued awareness, support, and action. We invite community members to join us in remembrance and solidarity for survivors.

We thank our partners in the Domestic & Gender-Based Violence Prevention Initiative at the City, and all of our nonprofit partners for their work to support survivors and create change in our community. by @barccofficial

🚨 WE DEMAND AN END TO SEXUAL VIOLENCE 🚨

Last night, we gathered with hundreds of people at the Boston Common to stand in solidarity with Jane Doe in her fight against Cornell University and the Chi Phi fraternity, and all survivors of sexual violence.

We’re calling on campuses, healthcare institutions, state leaders, and our own community to take action to end sexual violence 💜

The fight doesn’t end at the end of the rally, we’re fighting for survivors every single day.

Take action as a student and join our Feminist Campus Network (link in bio!)
