Last week I spoke at the Cornell Jane Doe Solidarity Rally on Boston Common organized by @massnow @victimrightslaw @barccofficial @jane.doe.inc @protecttransfutures and others. I condemned what the Cornell 7 and their 57 enablers in the group chat did to Jane Doe at the Chi Phi frat house — and I also condemned the failures of Cornell University and the criminal legal system in responding to her attackers. Jane Doe made a very clear statement during the Title IX process that she was 100% confident she was raped, and yet that process and those institutions failed her. I talked about some of what we’ve done on Beacon Hill to support survivors — and I joined with rally organizers in calling on the legislature to do more — by increasing state funding for sexual and domestic violence services, investing in prevention and response mechanisms, and removing systemic barriers preventing survivors from accessing support. In particular, the state government should fund and require mandatory consent education, from early elementary through high school and also pass the Healthy Youth Act.

Last night, we gathered with hundreds of people at the Boston Common to stand in solidarity with Jane Doe in her fight against Cornell University and the Chi Phi fraternity, and all survivors of sexual violence.

We’re calling on campuses, healthcare institutions, state leaders, and our own community to take action to end sexual violence 💜

The fight doesn’t end at the end of the rally, we’re fighting for survivors every single day.

Here in solidarity with @massnow @jane.doe.inc @barccofficial @victimrightslaw @impact_boston @protecttransfutures and survivors everywhere.

Rape and sexual assault are never acceptable. Sexual violence is not inevitable, and none of us should accept a society where women must live in fear and organize their lives around the threat of being attacked.

I want to condemn in the strongest possible terms what the Cornell 7 and their 57 enablers in the group chat did to Jane Doe at the Chi Phi frat house — and I also condemn the failures of Cornell University and the criminal legal system in responding to her attackers. Jane Doe made a very clear statement during the Title IX process that she was 100% confident she was raped, and yet that process and those institutions failed her.

And while the outrage of this event is what calls us here this evening — we know this problem is systemic — 26% of women report being sexually assaulted during their college years — this is a staggering figure and an urgent reminder that rape culture must end.

It’s not lost on me that I am a man speaking to you, in the context of a patriarchal society that privileges men, at a rally organized by the incredible women leaders of Mass Now, Jane Doe, BARCC, Victim Rights Law Center, and others — and yet, I accepted the invitation to be here this evening because we know it is important for men to speak out as well, to hold other men accountable, and to do everything in our power to push for meaningful change and demand an end to sexual violence.

As State Representative, I am committed to doing my part. We must increase state funding for sexual and domestic violence services; invest in prevention and response mechanisms, and remove systemic barriers preventing survivors from accessing support.

In particular, the state government should fund and require mandatory consent education, from early elementary through high school. We also need to pass the Healthy Youth Act to ensure evidence-based sex and relationship education is required statewide.

One legislator cannot do this alone — but seeing everyone here on the Common this evening gives me hope that real change is possible.

Called it! I’ve ordered not 1 but 2 card readers from Toast since Friday and we have received 0/2. The expedited 2nd order went out “next day” Tuesday but has been chilling at Fedex in Southie for the past 2 days 🤗 Not ordering a third…. FYI they are HQ’d IN BOSTON, like I could drive 15 minutes and pick it up but no, they use faraway warehouses [prob some cost-saving move to keep more of that fancy VC money 🤔]

I am grateful we have a way to take online orders at a volume that lets us stay in business, sincerely. But we pay for that. YTD it’s ~$2k so far for their services [monthly fees + HW] plus around $20k [yes TWENTY THOUSAND 🤔] in credit card transaction fees. $22k [just this year! We’ve been with them since 2019!] to get this bummer level of care. Not an isolated experience either [their support is always sooooo nice but slow and almost never what I need]. Glad we don’t treat our customers like this 🤮

Anyhow, long way to say please order online for tomorrow, we can do credit cards but it’s on our handheld, so slower. Also the battery on that keeps dying, so I’ll prob need a new one of those soon. CANT WAIT TO ORDER IT AND GET IT [stay tuned for the next chapter!] 🤗 Hopefully back to normal Sat + Sun. TIA for sticking with us through our nonsense.
