I care for a child with severe nonverbal autism and a child with cerebral palsy.

And I am very fortunate.

The facts?

I closed my personal training studio 10 weeks after my daughter’s autism diagnosis and took my business entirely online.

My husband didn’t work full time for 3.5 years and quit his career to be the primary caretaker when my business got big enough to support us.

He recently went back to work for one main reason…

Insurance AND my role with my girls as they hit puberty gets a little more complex.

And I’m lucky.

We don’t have a ton of help but we do have some.

We have been able to provide for our girls needs even when insurance says no (and they say no a lot).

Not everyone is so lucky.

I created Barely Regulated to provide for my family AND be able to give back to families that need respite.

A break.

Or a meal on a night when everything has been so hard.

But I can’t do this alone.

Our next drop is live.

I don’t expect you to watch our kids and give us a break.

I asked myself earlier this year, in a moment where self doubt was swallowing me whole and self acceptance felt like a prophesy…

What is this all for?

And when I wrote the word “this”, it meant more than parenthood, caregiving, business…

This meant, my life.

I think we’ve all had a “this” moment.

And on the other side of that question, sadder than I had been in many years, I got clarity.

I wish I could tell you clarity transformed immediately into resolute action, that would be a lie.

This feels like the single most ballsy move I’ve ever done.

But this little cloud has lit a fire in me. Emboldened by the gifts of vulnerability my audience on @mycoachlacy has so graciously shared…

I realized this cloud could do a lot.

Speak to acceptance in a world that wants to make us chase worthy like a drug.

Give respite and resources to families doing a job most won’t ever understand.

And bridge the gap of understanding between the two.

“This” began to take shape.

Barely Regulated will have its first merchandise launch later this month.

A limited edition capsule of pieces that have been designed and picked with love and intention.

And they are also comfy as hell.

I hope you’ll come along on this journey with me as I show you how I’m building this movement, designing these pieces and strutting around with pizazz as I do something that feels a little scary but a lot fulfilling.

We parent a child with cerebral palsy AND a child with nonverbal autism.⁣

And most days, I don’t know how we do it without having a full on break down.⁣
⁣
I run a full time business, he recently went back to work after working WITH me for 3.5 years after navigating my Dad dying from terminal cancer.⁣
⁣
We parent majority on our own, he’s my backup and I’m his.⁣
⁣
And I can tell you fully, we would have collapsed a long time ago if we didn’t give each other immense amounts of grace.⁣
⁣
Grace meaning…⁣
⁣
In our house, we DO have days where we openly cry, yell, get frustrated in front of our kids.⁣
⁣
In our house, our kids HAVE seen us struggle.⁣
⁣
On social media we’ve allowed Mothers and parents alike to believe that allowing your kids to see your emotions and struggles is causing trauma and is “bad”.⁣
⁣
I think that’s bullshit.⁣
⁣
How can we help our kids understand their emotions if they never see ours?⁣
⁣
How will we ever show our kids that feelings like anger, frustration, grief…⁣
⁣
all that can lead to short tempers, raised voices and tears…⁣
⁣
are valid if we act like committing one of the above is a cardinal sin?⁣
⁣
We teach our kids about emotions when kids see us emote AND are resilient.⁣
⁣
When we can lose our cool and they get an apology.⁣
⁣
When they see us frustrated and then see us model acknowledging it and keeping going.⁣
⁣
I created Barely Regulated to mean…⁣
⁣
I’m a great mother who loses her temper sometimes when days are too much.⁣
⁣
I’m a caring parent and also, I often have to model aplogizing to my kids.⁣
⁣
We have a good marriage but I would be lying if I said we haven’t gone through some deeply dark times that we’ve had to work hard to reconnect through.⁣
⁣
That’s called being human.⁣
⁣
My clothes stand for the imperfection that is all of us.⁣
⁣
And the mantra that we are all doing our best when there are 18 Instagram reels or carousels telling us we aren’t enough bc we did ___.⁣
⁣

I have a daughter with severe nonverbal autism as well, but my 13 yo is an artist.

She’s about to head to a full time school for the first time and this summer with her art teacher she designed a shirt for kids.

Sure, you could get one that says “be kind” at Walmart for $4, or you could comment LIENNA below and support a young artist who had to fight hard to learn to hold a pencil so she could draw.

Can’t shop, share, it’s free.

When my 13 year old daughter with cerebral palsy came to me with a t shirt design she made with her art teacher, she said “every kid should have one of these”.

And I don’t disagree.

A good reminder for parents AND kids. Kindness is not a word on a journal or a t shirt.

It’s a choice.

A daily one.

And it starts at home with the parents educating but also…

By parents being kind to other parents like me.

Supportive. Inclusive. Educated.

Kindness is not a slogan.

It’s not a trend.

It’s a daily decision.
