Baret Scholars is a global gap year journey that takes you across seven regions of the world. Our Scholars dive into metropolises like New York City, Sao Paulo, Paris, Istanbul, Delhi, and Beijing, making stops in a variety of outlying regions, from the Amazon and Patagonia to Shenzhen and Mumbai.

Our program is a chance to find a global network of curious, adventurous young minds, see parts of the world that most people never see, and make memories that most people never make. And it’s an opportunity to find your purpose.

Why take a gap year? Institutions like Harvard, Duke University, and Middlebury College encourage deferrals because students who take a gap perform better in the classroom, are more likely to be leaders, and are more likely to graduate. In a gap year, students discover independence, resilience, and the internal motivation necessary to pursue not only careers, but callings.

Read more about our program at www.baretscholars.org. Applications are still open for our 2026-2027 cohort, but will close soon! Apply now.

Do you want to see the world?

Are you wondering what it means to be a Baret Scholar?

Baret is gap year, but first, it is a journey: through five continents, seven cosmopolitan cities, and dozens of other locales:

New York City, Sao Paulo, Paris, Istanbul, Nairobi, Delhi, Beijing, the Amazon River, Hong Kong, Patagonia, Masai Mara, Nepal, London, Watamu, Morocco, and many, many others.

It is a journey where you will meet and be in dialogue with screenwriters and Oscar-winning documentarians, with founders of innovative tech companies, with political scientists and Opera singers and conservationists and explorers.

It is a journey that will surprise you every day.

But it is also an internal journey: a journey to align yourself with your values, your passions, and your future self. A journey of becoming, of finding your most resilient, adventurous, open-minded self. A journey with an international cohort which, even when it’s over, will mean you have friends in every corner of the world.

Our applications for 2027-2028 are now open. Take the plunge: apply now!

Our Baret Scholars have taken New York City by storm – or perhaps they’ve been taken with New York City. They’re now on Fellowships in Austin, Guatemala, New Orleans, Mexico City, and Washington DC, so it’s only appropriate to look back and reflect on their time in New York. It featured a dazzling array of speakers…

Joshua Seftel (@jrseftel), the documentarian best known for his Oscar-Winning All the Empty Rooms…

James Valenti (@jamesj_valenti), award-winning Opera tenor…

Richard Stengel (@therickstengel), former Under Secretary of State to Barack Obama, Editor of TIME, and author of several works of nonfiction…

Several of our speakers even hosted workshops for our Scholars. Andrew Essex, former ad executive and Senior Partner at Tata Consultancy Services let our Scholars pitch their business ideas to him. Simone White (@simonewhitemusic), a remarkable singer-songwriter, held a songwriting workshop for our Scholars.

And our Scholars made various other excursions: the esteemed Martha Graham Dance Company (@marthagrahamdance) let our Scholars observe a rehearsal. They also stopped in at the New Museum (@newmuseum) to explore the works of Arthur Jafa, to the 9/11 Museum (@911memorial), and volunteered at God’s Love We Deliver (@godslovenyc) to make meals for those in need. And of course, their time in New York City wouldn’t be complete without a picnic in Central Park (or two!)

This is just the beginning. There are six more regions to go, six more cosmopolitan cities, from São Paulo to Paris, from Istanbul to Nairobi, from Delhi to Beijing. Bon voyage, Scholars!

What is the most valuable experience one can have on a gap year?

For our Scholar Ayira Browne, it’s not only learning or seeing something new, it’s having her misconceptions corrected.

What she learned from singer-songwriter Simone White, who visited our Scholars at our Morning Program, is that making music and art may be deeply personal, but it’s a process that happens in community.

By sharing rough drafts of her songs, or even her diaries, with others, she can get feedback about how to improve her work and learn what moves others. To use Ayira’s words, she “makes it more personal by making it impersonal:” not allowing the private nature of her music stop her from making her process collaborative.

As an artist herself and someone interested in how artists make their work, Ayira can take insights and inspiration from someone like Simone as she journeys around the world. It’s these kind of insights, which are just waiting for our Scholars to snatch out of the air, that make a year with Baret a life-changing experience.

Each of our Scholars has their own passion. Through our Afternoon Programs, each finds a discipline and specialty to devote themselves to. Helping Hands, led by Julieta Pollari, MD and Francisco Brottier, MD, Baret Fellows and Medical Officers, gives our Scholars the opportunity to give back.

In New York City, they volunteered at God’s Love We Deliver (@godslovenyc), an organization that has delivered medically tailored meals to those in need for over 40 years. Working alongside volunteers who take time out of their busy schedules to make a difference, they helped pack hundreds of meals over the course of several hours.

The difference they felt was profound. Every Scholar we spoke to was craving more: to move through the world as an observer is simply different than being a part of it, and making a difference for others means making a difference for oneself.

Our Scholars look forward to being changed as much, if not more, by what they do as by what they see in their remarkable year.

One of the great pleasures of the Baret year is traveling with our Art Historian, Tom Snow. With a PhD in History of Art from UCL, Tom Snow has lectured at UCL and Sotheby’s Institute of Art for seven years, and his writings have appeared in Art Monthly, Frieze Magazine, Third Text, Grey Room, and Afterall.

In each region, Tom takes our Scholars through its great museums, as well as its off-the-beaten path treasures. One such museum is the New Museum in New York City (@newmuseum), where Tom Snow introduced our Scholars to the work of Arthur Jafa through the exhibition titled I Am Tony. Jafa’s work is renowned for, according to the New Museum, “placing the nation’s growing awareness of the history of institutional violence directed toward the Black community against the backdrop of the ascension of Black culture, music, and entertainment in American national identity.”

A gap year with Baret means not only seeing the world’s great cities, but encountering the historical context that makes them modern. It means engaging with culture at a deeper level by contemplating it through an analytical and critical lens. It’s only by taking a deeper look, and engaging with experts like Tom on the cultural output of each region, that one can become a global citizen.

Two weeks ago, we came together in New Hampshire for a week of orientation. It was the beginning of our third cohort; it was the beginning of 64 students from 28 countries starting their journey around the world. Orientation was filled with many sessions about Baret, how to navigate the program while navigating the world, how to respect each other, how to make the most of this special year. On the last day, as per tradition, we took a group picture, and here it is - our third cohort, coming together, for the first time before they begin a journey of learning, memories, and friendships.

After a week of orientation in the foothills of New Hampshire, Baret has arrived in New York City! Their first week has been a whirlwind, filled with volunteering, talks, activity, and a deepening of the friendships they began to form at orientation.

There have been speakers:

Rick Stengel, the former editor of TIME Magazine and undersecretary of State for Barack Obama, who spoke to our Scholars about the evolving political situation in the United States.

James Valenti, the operatic tenor who has played leading roles in operas all over the world.
And Vishwas Mishra, a systems and computation biologist decoding how microbial competition shapes infection outcomes in the gut.

As well as deep dives into American Film, led by our Associate Dean Ronan MacRory, American Politics, led by Zani Wilson and Wendy Lin, and intercultural communication.

There were also a variety of outings and excursions!

Volunteering at God’s Love We Deliver, led by Francisco Brottier and Julieta Pollari, our Medical Officers and Fellows. Our Scholars helped to provide medically tailored meals to those in need…There was also a visit to the New Museum with our Art Historian, Tom Snow, to explore the work of Arthur Jaffa, the filmmaker and visual artist…Biking through lower Manhattan and historic Greenwich Village, and a city-wide scavenger hunt…

Our Scholars also participated in their Afternoon Programs, explored the city, and began working away at their Capstone Projects. As always the week was that perfect mixture that makes Baret special. Our Scholars have the freedom to find their own way, but are given ample pathways to explore by our program structure.

One week is in the books! Onto the next!

A new journey has begun! Our latest cohort has just finished their orientation in the purple foothills of New Hampshire. They are, as we write, making their way down the Eastern seaboard to New York City, their first of seven cosmopolitan cities.

In New York, this cohort, from 29 countries and with backgrounds and accomplishments as diverse as the world itself, will meet with esteemed professionals, founders, and artists, get to know the city inside and out, and begin working on their own year-long projects.

And that will only be the beginning of a journey that will take them to the top of the world and the ends of the Earth.

260 years ago, Jeanne Baret began her own journey to become the first woman to circumnavigate the globe. It is in her spirit of curiosity, adventure, and bravery that our Scholars will take on their own journey: to become citizens and students of the world, and to have their best year yet.

We asked our Scholars for the single most important piece of advice they would give to our incoming Scholars, and these are the results!

What did we find? Yes, every Baret Scholar has their own unique secrets for making the most of this special, special year. But what leaps out is that their advice is not only good advice for a year with Baret – but good advice for life!

Get outside, meet new people, show up with curiosity, make the most of your opportunities, document your experiences – this is wisdom that our Scholars are dispensing, and we can say that at Baret Scholars, we’re not surprised to hear them giving out such good advice, because we know just how remarkable these young people are.
Thank you to all our Scholars! And to our prospective Scholars: pay attention!

You might just learn something!

A gap year shouldn’t be a year off, it should be a year very much on.

At Baret Scholars, we offer both structure and freedom. Our Scholars are presented with several key elements, detailed here in this post: a traveling speaker series, afternoon classes that are a mix of seminar and excursions, Fellowships, a robust advising system that is more student-oriented than any university’s, an end-of-year, open-ended Capstone project, side quests, and of course: the freedom to explore the world, your ambitions, and your future.

This is what makes Baret special: our program offers our Scholars a number of paths to take, but what they make of them will be up to them. And as our Scholars are adventurous, open-minded, and self-motivated, what they make of their chosen path is often remarkable.

We cannot wait to see what our next cohort does! And for those interested in applying, now is the time!
