Tomorrow 10/3 we will be attending the Fall festival from 1-5pm at the very special @spiralhousepark in Saugerties. If you've never been to Spiral House, this is an awesome opportunity to check out a truly incredible public park with landscape art, extensive native gardens, and the Spiral House itself- built from the discarded slabs of an historic bluestone quarry. They have lots of music and activities lined up for adults and kids alike and the weather looks gorgeous.

This will be one of our final sales events of the year which is kind of a shame because it's the best time of year for planting. We'll have dozens of native perennials, shrubs, and grasses for sale, all grown from Hudson Valley or Catskill mountain ecotypic seed. by @barkaboomnativeplants

Had a high-elevation day yesterday in search of Betula cordifolia seed before it scattered to the wind. It was almost too late but I managed to find a few stunted trees holding onto seed. The boreal forests atop the Catskills highest peaks is one of my favorite communities, with scrubby balsam fir, red spruce, mountain ash, and the aforementioned heart-leaved paper birch as the sole tree-sized woodies on this summit. Ilex mucronata (mountain holly), Viburnum cassinoides (wild raisin), and Rhododendron prinophyllum (early azalea) fill in open areas where there isn't enough soil even for the hardy conifers. taken in Catskill Park by @barkaboomnativeplants

This coming Saturday 9/19, we are having a fall plant sale with our friends @theforestexchange at the Catskill Forest Association building in Arkville. In addition to our larger plants, we're having our first ever 'plug bar' where folks can mix and match plugs on the spot. No quantity limits or restrictions- buy one or buy 100. We usually only sell plugs in full 50ct trays, so this is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to try out a smaller amount. A species list is still in the works but we will have at least a dozen different species of native forbs and grasses available. by @barkaboomnativeplants

We've taken some time off this month to spend time with family and enjoy the few remaining weeks of summer break before our daughter starts Kindergarten! But we are back and will be at @kingstonfarmersmarket tomorrow 8/22 with a truckload of seed-grown, Catskills/Hudson Valley ecotypic native perennials. Late summer and fall are one of the best times to plant perennials and we have a ton of great plants to share. Lots of stuff is discounted and we are having a big sale on some really beautiful common elderberry- $30/ea or 2 for $50. This is one of the fastest growing native shrubs and should produce some flowers and fruit next summer. by @barkaboomnativeplants

Took a morning off this week to visit a favorite local bog. Balsam fir and red spruce grow atop 13,000 years worth of partially decomposed sphagnum and wood which have accumulated to a depth of 30 feet. In sunnier openings pitcher plants and tawny cottongrass abound, alongside many other characteristic bog plants. Bunchberry and creeping snowberry form a carpet in the shadier places. Bogs like this one are among the rarest and most unique communities in the Catskills. taken in Catskills Mountains, NY by @barkaboomnativeplants

One of the more charismatic pollinators of peak summer- the hummingbird clearwing moth. They don't seem to take a break when the Monarda fistulosa is in bloom, as if they're rushing to capture every last remaining moment of summer. In addition to the wild bergamot they'll visit other native mints and Joe Pye here too. It's great to slow down this time of year and spend some time watching these guys. by @barkaboomnativeplants
