Japan's Soleil made a direct reference to the UK cover of This Year's Model for the 2019 album Lollipop Sixteen with bassist Sally Kubota.

And the cover of spin-off single Mellotron Girl featured Soleil in a full length take (see 2).

A year before Theophilus London's This Charming Mixtape, Atlanta quartet Gentleman Jesse & His Men provided a nod to their power pop roots with a downbeat take on the cover of This Year's Model for their 2008 eponymous-titled debut album.

Laura Hull's sober portrait of frontman Jesse Smith took its cue from the dun background of the Columbia release of TYM.

One of my favourite parodies of the This Year's Model front cover is by Brooklyn's @theophiluslondon for his 2009 electro/hip-hop release This Charming Mixtape.

Love the way the title brings in another sly reference to British post-punk.

On a wall in Larry's Bar @nationalportraitgallery hangs the @cecil_beaton self portrait taken behind his camera in the 1930s.

Barney Bubbles channelled Beaton's image when art-directing the front cover portrait taken by Chris Gabrin of @elviscostello for his 1978 album with The Attractions, This Years (sic) Model.

Beaton revisited the approach later in the 1930s using a 10-second timer.

And again in 1968 in the grounds of his Wiltshire home Reddish House. This image from The Cecil Beaton Archive at Sothebys.

And 10 years later in 1978, the year of This Years Model's release. This portrait by Tom Blau in the NPG collection.

Barney Bubbles' TYM designs for overseas territories include this variation for the release by Columbia in the US

And this for Smash Records in Sweden. There are other variations in the packaging which we'll come back to in time.

More Warholesque activity from Barney Bubbles - the Stiffs Live/Live Stiffs 60in x 40in poster dedicated to Larry Wallis, a performer in the indie label's 1977 tour alongside @elviscostello @nicklowesdog @ianduryofficial and @thewrecklesseric.

Like Larry - whose presence in the Wickwood Tavern, Loughborough Junction, impressed me mightily at the time - Chris Gabrin's portraits of the other four stars of the tour were subjected to similar vivid screen overlays.

After Larry Wallis's sad demise, @kosmovinyl produced badges with Joly from Better Badges in tribute to the Pink Fairies maestro.

I treasure this one pinned by Kosmo on my jacket a dozen-or-so years ago in New York.

Barney Bubbles' sleeve for @iggypopofficial & @jameswilliamsonpinkhearts' single Kill City/ I Got Nothin' featured a pink flouro treatment of a news agency image of the 1928 electrocution of the murderer Ruth Snyder on the front.

The back featured a quizzical murder scene replete with pink splashes.

As I wrote in The Wild World of Barney Bubbles - available from all the usual outlets - this sleeve recalled Warhol's Electric Chair series of artworks.

Barney Bubbles' ad and poster for Hawkwind's 1972 single release Silver Machine/Seven By 7.

The design unfolded Bubbles' sleeve for the 7inch - this was an expensive four colour affair utilising blue, pink, black and silver (of course) in its palette.

Just as he did five years later for his run of Stiff single sleeves, Bubbles reserved the back cover for the presentation of typographically clean credits.

Barney Bubbles' sleeve for the Sinceros' 1979 single Take Me To Your Leader/Quick Quick Slow.

The Sinceros' line-up included the late lamented Bobby Irwin on drums (looking slick second left in the uncredited band portrait on the back cover - see 2).

An all-round good egg, Bobby was a mainstay in the career of his great friend @nicklowesdog, helping shape the unique sound of NL's music.

Bobby went far too soon and is much-missed.
