Subculture fest. Barney Bubbles is one of POP/UP’s favourite album sleeve designers, and believe us that’s against some very stiff competition. For context check out @zig_zag_cat’s current @soundrecordsstroud window display of the man’s work . In fact @zig_zag_cat is so enamoured he’s hosting this panel with BB biographer @_paul_gorman_ and @markrblake whose book on #hipgnosisdesign explores another design titan of the golden age of vinyl sleeves. 3pm Sun Mar 26 @thesubrooms. NB It’s kind of weird that @hipgnosisstudios no longer pertains to the design duo of that name #stormthorgerson and @hipgnosispo, but thereby hangs a tale that Mr Blake can certainly clear up for you on the day…. @barney_bubbles_estate #darksideofthemoon #newbootsandpanties #elviscostelloandtheattractions #housesoftheholy #wishyouwerehere #sydbarrett

Happy Valentine’s Day to my Queen, @allisoncrutchfield! Eternally stylish, and always putting up with my photo shoots (see @allison_is_parched). Finding the love of your life is almost as rare as finding an original @barney_bubbles_estate Rockpile shirt from 1980, so I’m very lucky to have found both!

GENERATION X advert NME 1977

The ‘Your Generation’ 7inch sleeve was a clear indicator of Bubbles Bubbles’ distillation of art history references.

”As 1977 progressed, so the rest of the British music industry joined the fray started by Stiff and presented their singles in visually captivating sleeves. Consequently the freelance Bubbles was in demand, though the commission for the cover for Generation X’s debut single arose by coincidence.
During a phone call to Suzanne Spiro at Stiff Records, John Ingham (band manager and Spiro boyfriend) mentioned a newly found passion for the work of early 20th-century avant-garde European artist El Lissitzky. When Suzanne repeated the name Lissitzky over the phone, John heard Barney shouting in the back “What’s going on? Why are you talking about El Lissitzky?”. Next thing, Barney is on the phone and demand to know about Johns interest in the constructivist. John explained they were looking for a sleeve for Generation X. Within short Generation X had their new art director in place”.

This short version story is based on a text from Paul Gormans irresistible book ’The Wild World Of Barney Bubbles’.

Should be said that black and red arrangement can not only be quoted Lissitzky but also Henryk Berlewi a Polish-French painter, graphic designer and art theorist, who paved the way for optical art.

Not only the debut single featured the graphic use of the numerals 45 in direct reference to the rpm of a 7inch single.

Swipe for their second and third 7inch sleeve (4-6) where numerals 45 is re-used on the back of sleeve. Work samples from Lissitzky (7) and Berlewi (8).

I visited The Horror Show @somersethouse this week - a twisted tale of modern Britain. Fantastic! Fully recommend! Came away with my ‘creative block’ fully unblocked & my mojo working again! 🙌 Impossible to capture in a small video, but gave it a go! #somersethouse #thehorrorshow #teenagerampage #disruption #misrule #punk #goth #blitzkids #freakscomeoutatnite #1970s #1980s #1990s #fashion #culture #london #bauhaus #photography @scarlett_styleicon #scarlettcannon #fashion #style #photography #graphics #belalugosisdead #london #clubnight #freakscomeoutatnite I have tried my best to tag the contributors - please tag if I have missed you!

TUESDAY SPINS
SECONDS OF PLEASURE (1980)
Here is Matsi with a 1980 album by Rockpile, a band consisting of guitarists/vocalists Dave Edmunds and Billy Bremner, bassist/vocalist Nick Lowe, and drummer Terry Williams.

The band had played together on various solo albums by Edmunds and Lowe in previous years, but Seconds of Pleasure would be the first (and only) album released under the Rockpile name.

The album's opening track, "Teacher, Teacher", became a minor hit on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was written by Kenny Pickett and Eddie Phillips, both of whom were former members of the 1960s British rock band The Creation.

Other favorites are “Play That Fast Thing (One More Time)", “When I Write the Book", and "If Sugar Was As Sweet As You"

A four-song EP, Nick Lowe & Dave Edmunds Sing the Everly Brothers, was included in the first pressings of the LP; the songs were later included on the album's various CD versions.

The front cover is a painting by the designer Barney Bubbles, who used pseudonyms and rarely signed his work. This is signed "Dag".

Took the first few weeks of the year off to rest, recharge, and do a lot of yoga (I know better than to try to do too much during Mercury RX,) but tomorrow I’m back on the decks and playing 60’s and 70’s tunes deep, deep into the night at @thefloridiansocial 🥂💖⚡️
