CNC’ed Birch ply wall, (which went across to the next alcove) with floating solid ash shelves and countertop. The cupboards are painted in F&B stone ground with English oak door knobs. Built together with my old pal Oscar Hunt, who died earlier this month. These tetris blocks were part of a trade stand we made for University of the Arts at the business design centre, circa 2010. I never much liked what we made for the show but after it was dismantled we thought it would be fun to photograph these huge shapes in incongruous settings, such as the Heygate estate in Elephant & Castle, Epping Forest and the middle of Oxford Street. This was probably the most successful image. Photographed by @guyarchard

I knew the Heygate pretty well as I lived next door in Oswin street behind the shopping centre in 2003 and in 2009 I ended up photographing the last 10 residents of this, the largest brutalist social housing projects in Europe, for a story my wife was writing for The Independent.

It was sad hearing the stories of whole generations being relocated miles outside of the area, an entire community of 3000 people dislocated - this compounded by Southwark council’s cronyism, with Australian corporation Landlease and the huge lack of promised affordable housing in the blocks that replaced it. taken in Elephant and Castle by @barneybeechstudio

Ickburgh Road house extension. A labour of love for a number of years. The floor finish was the concrete slab ground down then painted with garage floor paint. The north facing light provided a perfect environment for a serious jungle and the idea with the big black kitchen was that it felt like some kind of giant UFO sculpture that fell from the sky. Built with long time collaborators @reevesandbond with custom handles from offcuts of oak by @nicholsbroswoodturners in Walthamstow.

Cork writing shed for the wife. I was originally going to go full Bauhaus and have a circle , square and a triangle window, but a third window on one side seemed too fussy.

BIG BLUE 🔵 new bespoke bedroom unit and large pegboard for Alex in north Bristol. Blue valcromat and birch ply. Had a lot of fun building this with @reevesandbond 🔨 Thanks so much @peopleandspaces.design for the commission

‘It started with the building, falling in love with the building.’

When graphic designer and exhibition curator Barney Beech and acclaimed author Charlotte Philby first saw 17 Midland Road, they knew it could be something amazing. Neglected and in a state of disrepair, the building was in serious need of restoration–and the couple had the creative vision to bring it back to life.

A true labour of love, the couple have transformed the building into a multi-purpose space—part design studio, part gallery, and part guest accommodation—that aims to spark conversation and bring art closer to the community.

👋 ✂️ New chapter ✂️👋

From mid September we will be permanently renting out Downstairs at 17 Midland Road.

We’ve had the most incredible experience over the past two and a bit years running our gallery and cultural space in the heart of Bristol’s old market, building a wonderful community whom we cherish.
