‘It started with the building, falling in love with the building.’

When graphic designer and exhibition curator Barney Beech and acclaimed author Charlotte Philby first saw 17 Midland Road, they knew it could be something amazing. Neglected and in a state of disrepair, the building was in serious need of restoration–and the couple had the creative vision to bring it back to life.

A true labour of love, the couple have transformed the building into a multi-purpose space—part design studio, part gallery, and part guest accommodation—that aims to spark conversation and bring art closer to the community.

Sometimes you’ve got to just run with where the energy is..

Immensely proud to open a @tresvibe pop up shop in Bristol. Using @appearherehq

We are open now for the next three days @17midlandroad

We are serving @gaiacoffee_ with a special new blend.

Grateful to have our lovely @jodileebythesea_ helping every step of the way.

And it wouldn’t be me if we didn’t make it a family thing. With my sister @robynelizahannah sharing the space with us running her business @somethingfruitful

@tresvibe has been great fun as a passion project that is evolving to be a-bit more serious but still very fun. Me and @ceri.pierson are just seeing where it takes us.

So if you’re in Bristol, Come say hi.

T H I S I S Y O U R S I G N

To start taking those baby steps towards making your dreams a reality! A year ago this week I taught my last class for the last time after 20 years as a primary school teacher.

I had been growing my business representing artists using my home as a backdrop to the art slowly but surely for a few years and it was time to make a proper go of it. (The origin of the initial idea is a whole other story for another time!)

It was finally time to ‘DIVE’ into the art world as a gallerist full time!

I think my biggest takeaway from my experience so far of being a business owner is don’t wait for things to be absolutely perfect, just start the best you can for now and change things up as you go. As long as your idea is a strong one and you work hard and mean well, everything will work out!

One of the things I wanted to do once I had left teaching and was a full time art wrangler was to run pop up art exhibitions alongside my private gallery. It just wasn’t a possibility when I was still teaching.

Fast forward to June this year and that dream became a reality! (Thanks in no small part to @suzerileystudio and her brilliant idea in the first place!)

We curated DIVE which brought together 14 female artists inspired by swimming in all it’s forms and for many reasons. @17midlandroad was the perfect venue and we loved being there. Making this reel took me right back and it definitely made me a bit emosh, not gonna to lie!

The remaining works from the show are on my website until the end of the summer so if any have caught your eye feel free to head over and check them out! There are some stunners still to be had and you don’t necessarily need to be a fan of swimming to enjoy them! I have tagged the artists who were part of the show in the reel.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk! Have a lovely day! Em x

PS. There are two DIVE caps left from the show.. I added them to the website yesterday 💙🏊🏻‍♂️
