What makes something valuable to you? We want to know.

Barter Boat is an interactive installation where you (yes, you!) can barter objects with us. In exchange for bringing us something, you’ll get a one-of-a-kind package put together of things we’ve gotten on our previous stops.

We’ve been to over 10 cities throughout the USA, and we’d love to visit you next! ⚓️🚢🛶

In defiance of the USA’s single-use consumer culture, we love to learn about how real people find emotional, artistic, or personal value in objects.

DM us if you’d like us to bring Barter Boat to you…or if you have something good to trade. by @barter_boat

This is a selection of items we bartered for at the Celebration of Nations festival last month in Rolla, MO!

If you have an object with a story behind it, we hope to hear that story and trade with you at a future stop. ⚓️

We had a great time at the Celebration of Nations in Rolla this weekend! Here are a few highlights ⚓️

This is an annual event, with this year’s festival celebrating the centennial of Route 66.

The event started with a parade where folks represented countries from around the world!

We made a special trade where this human prepared a snazzy collection of goodies inside a prescription container.

What they traded for was a limited-edition print by the talented Nick Potter.

Thank you for bartering with us, Rolla!

We always want to hear about little treasures found in unexpected places. The “Trash Guy” was digging recyclables out of the trash, and he found a beautiful glass turtle that someone had tossed!

If you have a treasure found in an unexpected place (including the trash), then we hope to learn about it and trade for it at a future stop!

On September 28-29, we will be presenting at the “Place. People. Purpose.” Symposium at the Haan Museum of Indiana Art!

This symposium is a gathering that explores art’s relationship to place, identity, and community. We’ll be sharing how we see this happening through what we do on the Barter Boat!

If you’d like to hear from us and from other artists and educators, you can register on The Haan Museum’s website. We’d be thrilled to see you there!
