Sarah Chilvers and Giulia Ricci at the gallery for the closing event of their showcase on Saturday.
At first glance, Chilvers and Ricci share an interest in systems, repetition and the discipline of working on paper. Yet their works are never simply exercises in order. Each artist uses structure to allow something less predictable to emerge.

One drawing. An Artsy Online Exclusive.

Our latest Artsy Online Exclusive is devoted to Frank Gerritzโ€™s Two Center Connection II (2015). We wanted to give this work the space and attention to reveal how much its apparently simple composition contains.

Two graphite squares align across adjacent sheets of paper. Their proximity suggests a continuous form, while the narrow interval keeps them separate. The surrounding white space becomes part of this relationship, allowing two small elements to organise the entire field.

The square carries a long history in abstraction, reaching back to Malevich. For Gerritz, it has a concrete, sculptural basis: the plan view of a column-like solid, rooted in the proportions of the body. Repeated pencil applications give it a visual density that stands for the physical weight of iron.

Light brings another dimension to the drawing. As the graphite catches it, the surface shifts, revealing the material presence within the precise form.

Explore Two Center Connection II in our Artsy Online Exclusive.

Ten years after Giulia Ricci and Sarah Chilvers first exhibited together at our former Margaret Street space, we are delighted to bring their work together again.

Both artists share an interest in systems, repetition and working on paper, yet leave space for chance and uncertainty. Ricciโ€™s new Rastrum Drawings use a five-line musical notation nib to evoke landscapes, waterways and shifting paths. Chilvers uses dice to guide decisions about colour, direction and scale, allowing the unexpected to enter each work.

We look forward to welcoming you to the gallery and sharing these quietly remarkable works in person.

Our two person show at Bartha Contemporary is still visible online on the gallery's website till August 22nd, catch up with the video conversation if you'd like to hear how our practices have evolved over the past decade.

The exhibition marks ten years since mine and Sarah Chilvers' two-person show @barthacontemporary in Margaret Street.

Since the pandemic, Sarah and I have been meeting online on a regular basis to discuss our practices and how they have evolved as our lives changed, through personal events such as motherhood and caring for elderly parents, and external events that have been affecting the contexts in which we operate as artists.

The exhibition presents pieces from new bodies of work that reflect these changes and our relationship with the current times and their challenges, environmental as well as technological. In particular, my work relates to my research on climate change and floods, while Sarahโ€™s methods present fascinating analogies with AI, while staying true to her life-long commitment to abstraction.

A close up detailed view of my Rastrum Drawing #29, 2026, made with Rohrers traditional ink on Fabriano Artistico paper.

This drawing is part of the online two-person show Sarah Chilvers + Giulia Ricci _ Revisited currently @barthacontemporary

This work is part of a series born out of my research into the relationship with my native landscape following the floods of 2023-24. It's about the line, of course, and rivers.

This particular image also makes me think of textures in nature such as in vegetable like celery and fennel.

Please check out the exhibition on @barthacontemporary 's website and listen to Sarah and I discussing what has changed in our way of working in the past ten years.

Sarah Chilvers + Giulia Ricci _ Revisited
Online Viewing Room continues until July 11th (link in bio)

Ten years after Sarah Chilvers and Giulia Ricci first showed together at our former Margaret Street space, this online showcase brings their work into renewed conversation. It looks back at that earlier exhibition while presenting recent works that reflect how both artists have continued to develop precise, thoughtful and deeply personal approaches to abstraction.

At first glance, Chilvers and Ricci share an interest in systems, repetition and the discipline of working on paper. Yet their works are never simply exercises in order. Each artist uses structure as a way of allowing something less predictable to emerge. Control is present, but it is tested by chance, movement, time and the changing conditions of the world around them.

Beat Zoderer _ HAIKU _ Three-Layered Concrete Poems
Continues until July 11th (by appointment - please DM)

Bartha_contemporary is pleased to present a new body of work by Swiss artist Beat Zoderer, continuing one of the most distinctive practices in contemporary geometric abstraction. The paintings from the HAIKU series demonstrate the artistโ€™s enduring ability to reconcile conceptual precision with visual spontaneity, creating works that are at once rigorously constructed and unexpectedly lyrical.

The title of the series refers to the Japanese poetic form, whose brevity and clarity conceal remarkable emotional and intellectual depth. Rather than illustrating haiku, Zoderer adopts its structural economy as a conceptual framework. Each painting is composed of three successive translucent layers of paint, carefully superimposed within irregular and shifting grid structures. The resulting compositions are restrained yet visually complex, revealing an extraordinary richness through reduction.

Throughout his career, Zoderer has challenged the ideal of mathematical perfection that characterised much twentieth-century geometric abstraction. In Switzerland, concrete art found some of its clearest and most influential expressions in the work of Max Bill, Camille Graeser, Verena Loewensberg and Richard Paul Lohse, whose commitment to order, proportion and systematic construction shaped a decisive chapter in post-war abstraction. Zoderer works in close dialogue with this legacy, yet approaches it with a freer, more inquisitive sensibility, allowing intuition, humour, touch, and irregularity to unsettle its stricter conventions.

See link in bio for exhibition website.

RIP Joan Witek (1943-2026)
โ–ช๏ธ
Joan Witek, a painter of singular vision and a respected curator whose institutional work helped shape the American understanding of Pre-Columbian and New Guinean art, died on June 6, 2026. Witek spent more than five decades obsessively probing the compositional range of the color black. Through distinct mediums, her work vacillating between tight repetitive marks in oil stick on canvas to fluid lyrical blots in watercolor. Witek will be remembered as a key presence in the downtown New York art world, and celebrated for her consistency and depth alongside dominant figures such as Ellsworth Kelly, Frank Stella, and Richard Serra.
