Coly is part of our current online exhibition on Artsy (Link in Bio). Born out of an interest in the avant-garde, architecture, and the aesthetic of the Machine Age, Florian Baudrexel‘s works, made of recyclable everyday materials, embrace a carefully orchestrated sense of motion and direction. The pieces presented on Artsy were all constructed from cardboard, which has been a critical component of the German artist’s practice for many years and reflects his interest in ecologically sound materials.

Just published: Camera consciousness: on Susan Morris’s ‘Concordances’ and ‘Silence (On Prepared Loom), by Margaret Iversen in Burlington Contemporary. (Link in Bio.)

This phenomenal Journal article considers Susan Morris’s practice. It explores two recent works: “Concordance VII Unhappiest Day 2020 / Concordance VIII Happiest Day 2020” part of the artist’s ongoing Concordances Series (depicted here), and “Silence (On Prepared Loom)” six tapestries commissioned for the new Library and Study Centre at St John’s College, University of Oxford.

We are pleased to present a selection of works by Mali Morris on Artsy (please see link to Viewing Room in bio) ahead of a showcase at our space later this year. In Mali Morris’ work, the artist’s hand is at the forefront of the canvas. While she paints fundamental geometric forms as a base for her paintings and works on paper, Morris is direct with her touch and meticulous in her colour relationships. Here, the artist’s presence and agency become evident. Morris’ oeuvre juxtaposes universally recognised shapes with the artist’s unrestricted paint application. Squares, circles, and brushed marks occupy the surfaces of her compositions in complex spatial painterly layers.

Today, we remember the Japanese Manga artist Akira Toriyama, who passed at 68 on March 1st. The artist, best known for his global success with the manga and anime franchise Dragon Bal, inspired artists and fans of the genre around the globe.
Not least, the artist Stefana McClure @stefanamcclure spent several years living and working in Japan. In five parts, Stefana McClure’s 2005 homage depicts the complete superimposed text from the five original manga titles: “Let the Contest Begin, Milk Delivery, Ascetic Training, Hard Work Pays!!, Strongest Under the Heavens.” Each piece measures 33 x 41 cm | 13 x 16 1/10 in, Blue transfer paper mounted on rag.

Dragon Ball, a seminal Japanese manga series by Akira Toriyama, has left an unparalleled legacy, selling between 250 to 300 million copies globally and securing its place as the second best-selling manga series of all time. Originally published in the Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine from 1984 to 1995, its 519 chapters were compiled into 42 volumes. Drawing inspiration from the classic tale 'Journey to the West,' Dragon Ball evolved from a comedic narrative to an action-packed martial arts saga. The story chronicles Son Goku's journey from childhood to adulthood in his quest for the Dragon Balls, magical orbs that summon a wish-granting dragon. This unique narrative has not only captivated millions but also influenced a myriad of artists and series such as 'One Piece,' 'Naruto,' and 'Bleach.'

The suite was first exhibited in 2006 at Kunstverein Grafschaft Bentheim as part of Stefana McClure’s joint exhibition with Jill Baroff, ‘The Shape of Time' (Illustrated p.24 in the accompanying catalogue).

Beat Zoderer’s Studie zu OP No.1 V.II auf vier Lagen, 2006 - is part of our current showcase, ‘The Green New Deal’ (link in bio) and belongs to the larger OP Series or “Einspann/Clamped” pieces. Each consists of three-dimensional, geometric compositions constructed from layers of interwoven, colourful bands.
The work showcases a complex interplay of two colours, which is unique in the context of the OP Series, which usually encompasses a vast and ever-growing colour palette. This piece, the first in the suite, is described as the only one in the series to utilise just two colours. Indeed, the two-tone colour scheme creates an exceptional optical illusion of depth and movement, akin to Op art. With its overlapping bands, the piece’s design creates a dynamic visual effect, with the colours alternating and seemingly pulsating as the viewer’s perspective changes.

In the context of Zoderer’s work, the term “Einspann/Clamped” works might refer to a specific technique or conceptual approach in his art-making process, which involved tension, layering, or capturing circular forms in a rectangular frame.
From the front, the work reads like a black-and-white drawing, revealing its depth and colours as the angle shifts and the depth of the work moves into view.

It is composed of soft yellow and sage green, applied in a matte dispersion across riveted metal strips of diverse widths, apertures, and alternating colour arrangements. The raw, handmade quality of the artwork challenges its inherent geometric structure, emphasising the piece’s role as both an artist’s study and a foundational precursor to one of the most impactful series in Beat Zoderer’s oeuvre to date. Within the framework of ‘The Green New Deal’ exhibition, this relief work teeters on the edge between sculpture and drawing.

The emotive title ‘Green New Deal’ draws on the groundbreaking policy, offering a positive outlook and a forward-thinking framework for the future. In the same vain, this selection of works by artists Florian Baudrexel, Stephan Baumkötter, Adam Barker-Mill, Henrik Eiben, Mike Meiré, David Murphy, Ignacio Uriarte, Winston Roeth and Beat Zoderer offers a comprehensive overview of contemporary art practice: the works in this showcase all incorporate a green colour palette.

Environmental themes inform many of the artist’s oeuvre, ranging from Florian Baudrexel's conscious choice of materials to Mike Meiré’s thematic explorations to Adam Barker-Mill’s engagement with organic farming and soil regeneration. The presentation offers an overview of works that reimagine the qualities of one of the most prevalent non-primary colours. Indeed, green, whose spectrum ranges from jade to chartreuse, encapsulates memories, reflecting a collective longing for beauty and a pursuit of hope.

In our recent Journal entry (link in bio), 'James Howell - Gesamtkunstwerk', our colleague Hannah Lebow considers the work and practice of the late artist, his interests in architecture and the unique collaboration with New York Architects TenBerke.

Lebow notes: the "...article describes the practices of James Howell, whose artistry and the spaces in which he developed his paintings informed one another. Howell's career is recognised by his resolute dedication to the study of light and perception, which extended past his artistry and into his environment, most notably observed as we delve into the intricacies of his Perry Street Loft."
