LET THE VOICE RETURN
By Xinyi Yang in the Site Half Living:Social Ecologies in the Symbiocene studio @bartlett_landscape

Let the Voice Return explores how landscape architecture can restore acoustic connectivity in Camden while keeping its cultural identity active and audible. Centred on the former Camden Goods Staticon, the project responds to railway vibration, traffic, markets and
amplified music that fragment ecological soundscapes and disrupt wildlife communication. Rather than treating sound simply as noise to remove, the design reorganises the site as a network of acoustichabitats, ecological corridors and cultural spaces. Planting, water, landform and spatial buffers reduce harmful interference, reconnect wildlife movement and strengthen biophony and geophony. The proposal is tested through a series of distinct spaces: the former Potato Market becomes a renewed market landscape with a riverside platform and habitat areas; the Punk Museum combines subcultureexhibitions, a small market and a sunken performance venue with an adjoining plaza; and Habitat Garden uses animal-friendly structures and supporting habitat design to help wildlife live within a
fragmented urban environment. Camden’s railway, market and purnk identities remain active parts of the landscape rather than being erased. #bartlettlandscape #bartlettstudio2 #landarch #design #landscapearchitecture by @bartlettstudio2

-Weaving Whitechapel by @akihiii_13 as part of the Site Half Living:Social Ecologies in the Symbiocene at @bartlett_landscape

This project reimagines the area around Whitechapel Station as a connected cultural and ecological landscape, transforming fragmented, traffic-dominated and underused urban spaces into a more inclusive public realm. Responding to the station, Whitechapel market, surrounding institutions and railway infrastructure, the proposal reduces traffic dominance and introduces a continuous landscape network that
reconnects previously separated spaces. Rainwater is brought to the surface as a visible part of the public realm, while cultural references are translated through paving patterns, spice planting and adaptable market structures. Together, these interventions turn infrastructure, movement and everyday community life into active components of the landscape.
Beginning with the busy market street, the design creates a more vibrant and flexible ground where commuting, trading and social life can coexist. To the south, underused hard standing is transformed into a slower and more restorative landscape of healing
gardens. To the north, railway edges and leftover spaces are reimagined as rewilded ecological corridors that support biodiversity and create new relationships between people and infrastructure. Across the site, layered planting, micro-topography and
regenerative design improve microclimate and rainwater management while creating
spaces for gathering, resting, walking and informal encounter. The project proposes
landscape as a connective urban framework—one that brings together culture, ecology
and everyday life to create a more resilient Whitechapel. #bartlettlandscape #bartlettstudio2 #landarch #landscape #design by @bartlettstudio2

Common Ground:A Shared Landscape for Nature and Culture by @fann_0914 @bartlett_landscape

Old Oak Common is a landscape shaped by infrastructure, industry and separation.
Railways, roads, fenced yards and the Grand Union Canal divide the site into disconnected
territories, limiting ecological continuity and public access.
Common Ground reimagines the site as a landscape between the living and the
constructed, where nature and culture coexist and gradually transform one another. Existing
structures, hard surfaces and railway remnants remain alongside emerging vegetation,
water and ecological processes. Depaving, soil exposure, rain gardens and seasonal
wetlands allow natural succession to become part of the landscape over time.
A new network of bridges, elevated walkways, paths and community spaces reconnects
previously separated areas, allowing people to move through, observe and participate while
protecting more sensitive habitats.
Rather than treating the “common” simply as public open space, the project proposes a
shared ground negotiated between people, plants, wildlife, water and industrial history.
Through selective intervention, fragmentation becomes connection, creating a landscape
that can grow, adapt and be collectively experienced over time by @bartlettstudio2
