In the face of rising global temperatures, accelerating rates of biodiversity loss and extreme weather events, adaptation is imperative. As cities become denser, resources become scarcer, and habitats become more disrupted, it is now that designers have responsibility to influence change.

Inspired by E.O Wilson’s Half-Earth theory, this project challenges the traditional approach to combating biodiversity loss by reinstating the lost old London Bridge as an experimental ‘witness’ biome. Only accessible to scientists, the biome allows people to observe shifts in nature within the Anthropocene. The project questions if we should keep humans and nature separated to combat biodiversity loss and challenges whether humans are part of the ecosystem.

Extending to the shore, the project breaks up the ground plane and integrates climate adapted green spaces through porous surfaces of recycled waste materials, expanding novel frameworks of landscape typologies into an expansive masterplan. At its core, Secondground proposes that the urban landscape cannot remain fixed, either physically or theoretically, it must evolve and educate in response to global changes.

At Parc des Ateliers — LUMA Arles, @bassmets transformed a former industrial concrete site into a living landscape rooted in local Mediterranean ecologies. The park spans ~42,000 m² with a 2,500 m² pond at its heart, now shaping a cooler microclimate. Over 500 trees of different native species — from strawberry trees to evergreen oaks, Montpellier maples and stone pines — have been planted deliberately across varied topographies to create shade, shelter and structure. Beyond the trees, around 80,000 plants including shrubs, grasses and groundcover bring biodiversity and seasonal richness to the terrain, echoing the Camargue, Crau and Alpilles landscapes all within one park. Water systems sourced from the Canal de Craponne support growth and help temper summer heat, turning what was once barren into a resilient public greenspace integrated with art, architecture and nature. #bartlettlandscape @bartlettstudio2 @bartlett_landscape

365 of 365. That’s a wrap on the #postaday marathon. Thanks for following along and commenting when inspired to do so.

Here’s to 2026 and I leave you with this inspiring quote (insert she/her as required):

“When the artist is alive in any person, whatever his kind of work may be, he becomes an inventive, searching, daring, self-expressive creature. He becomes interesting to other people. He disturbs, upsets, enlightens, and opens ways for a better understanding. Where those who are not artists are trying to close the book, he opens it and shows there are still more pages possible.” Robert Henri The Art Spirit 1923

In an effort to make visible the often incomprehensible and minute incremental change instigated by climate change, Heather Ran devised a Climate Change Museum in the Thames Estuary. Various architectural and landscape devices would measure and make visible the slow, inexorable transformations. #postaday #landarch #design #bartlettlandscape #bartlettstudio2
