Every October since 2018, Bar Wotever has dedicated its show to Black History Month, platforming Black queer artists across every discipline. A diverse lineup has always been part of who we are at all of our shows. At our roots we’re an anarchist, decolonial show that pays every single performer, open mic slots included. Giving people a platform, and especially giving marginalised artists a platform, is one of the most important things we do.

So we want to be honest with you. Looking back at our ticket sales since 2018, our Black History Month show sells on average 35% fewer tickets than our other shows, and that is deeply disappointing.

We’re asking our audience, and our white audience in particular, to sit with that for a moment and ask yourselves why. What is it about this show that makes you feel you don’t need to be there?

This is the one show in our year that goes ahead no matter what. If ticket sales don’t cover the costs, we as producers will absorb the loss out of our own pockets, because this platform matters far too much to us to let it go. We’d just really rather it didn’t have to come to that.

So come and join us on Saturday 17th October at Piehouse Co-op in Deptford. If you can’t make it, please consider buying a ticket anyway to support the night and the artists performing. And if you haven’t done anything this year to show up for Black people and the Black community, this is the bare minimum you can do to support Black queer art. taken in Piehouse Co-Op by @barwot

Joining us in a few weeks is @joytothecrown at our BHM show 😍💖

Ayo is a Nigerian/Jamaican Lêsbîan and a spoken word performer.

They were raised in Pan Africanism and their poetry is very centred around African identity, our roots and interconnectedness, very anti-colonial and really an invocation of our ancestors, a veneration of them.

JOINING US NEXT MONTH: @manny_harmony11 😍💖

Hi, I’m MANNY (It’s M to the Y) I am a performer and writer from East London. I graduated from the University of Roehampton with a degree in Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies.

I like to work on projects, collaborate with people and more. I love to explore all different topics and themes in my work.

I’m a spoken word artist who enjoys connecting spoken word with movements mostly but also acting, music and dance together.

NEXT UP FOR OUR BHM SHOW IN OCTOBER: it’s @r.hi.ana 😍💖

They are a Queer Black-Caribbean Writer who enjoys the intertwine of fiction and literature, with a particular focus on our connection to nature to explore the root of emotions and branching off perceptions.

Be prepared for distorted images and word play. They take both a deeply emotional & sometimes academic approach when it comes to any and all writing [perhaps was the influence of the History & English degree!]

FIRST OF OUR MANY ACTS FOR NEXT MONTHS BHM SHOW 😍 it’s @poetrybytrius 💖

Trius is a multidisciplinary storyteller working across spoken word, music, burlesque, and cabaret. Their work is confessional and genre-blurring, balancing withering cynicism with genuine vulnerability to unpick the tangled webs we weave.
