𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 & 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 - @geraldcullifordlimited x @carramarbleltd visit Part I

A visit to the stone yard in Surrey and workshop in London to follow the journey of stone, from careful procurement through to detailed fabrication.

Our visit to the stone yard with @geraldcullifordlimited followed the early stages of the stone selection process, from sourcing and procurement through to choosing individual slabs for specific applications and schemes.

Once selected, the stone is transferred to @carramarbleltd , where the fabrication process begins. Using a combination of the latest technology including waterjet cutting and automated bridge saws, as well as traditional masonry skills acquired over thirty years within the stone industry, each slab is carefully worked and finished in response to the detailed requirements of each individual project.

A closer look at the process behind the materiality, coordination and craftsmanship involved before installation on site.

𝗠𝗘𝗘𝗧 𝗪𝗔𝗟𝗗𝗘𝗞

Our Polish carpenter, able to turn his hand to almost anything. Tattooed, powered by heavy metal, partial to a whisky and equipped with a Polish vocabulary the team can now confidently repeat.

Once thin with long hair, Waldek has been with us for over two decades, though his shoulder and knee are now putting in for early retirement.

We asked the team for a few words about his craftsmanship. This is what they sent us. A professional reference is still pending.

Disclaimer: all said with affection. We’d be lost without him, but please don’t tell him that.

𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 – Bathroom Surfaces by @bascombdrew

Stone, tile and timber each bring different qualities to a bathroom, shaping how a space feels and performs over time.

Across a range of projects, material selection begins early in the design process, considering scale, texture, durability and how individual surfaces relate to natural light, joinery and architectural detail. The decisions are often subtle, but they play an important role in creating spaces that feel coherent and long-lasting.

This series looks more closely at those details, exploring the materials, finishes and craftsmanship behind the completed rooms. (see below)

Slide 1 - Master ensuite featuring Iris Ceramic Tiles by @domustiles
Slide 2 - A deck-mounted basin tap with black lever handles over a wall-mounted ceramic basin.
Slide 3 - Master ensuite featuring a Corian basin supplied & fitted by @counterproduction using Nero Marquina marble
Slide 4 - Master ensuite for a 1950s style London apartment with stone by @carramarbleltd supplied through @mglwarehouse
Slide 5 - Stone and tile makers include @gdstones @domustiles and @ceramicherefin who bring together honed stone, glazed ceramic and natural timber finishes to the scheme.

𝗖𝗨𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗠-𝗗𝗘𝗦𝗜𝗚𝗡𝗘𝗗 𝗖𝗔𝗕𝗜𝗡𝗘𝗧𝗥𝗬

Cabinetry by @cheverell_ltd for a private home in Marylebone, including a bespoke TV and media cabinet and a walk-in wardrobe.

Each asks something different of the joinery: accommodating technology and access within a media cabinet, or organising a wardrobe around the clothing and routines of its owner.

Working with Cheverell over many years has given us a shared understanding of how these requirements translate into the finished piece. Together, we coordinate dimensions, internal arrangements and interfaces with other trades early, so the practical details are resolved alongside the wider design.

GOOD COMPANY, SHARED EXPERIENCE

We joined @smet_staircases for their annual gathering at @hollandandhollandand1835. A day of clay pigeon shooting and lunch brought together people from across construction, with time to catch up, compare notes and get to know one another.

Holland & Holland’s history of gunmaking dates back to 1835, while SMET celebrates 20 years of staircase craftsmanship. Both offered a reminder of the time and care involved in developing a craft, and the value of working with people who know their trade.

Thank you, SMET, for bringing us together and for your generous hospitality. Congratulations on 20 years.

#𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 to our visit earlier in June to @geraldcullifordlimited , where we followed the journey of stone through the yard and workshop, from sourcing and procurement through to detailed fabrication.

The visit informed our understanding in a new way of the early stone selection process, looking at individual slabs and considering how each would work for a variety of applications and schemes. Seeing the material at this stage gives a clearer understanding of its colour, variation and character before fabrication begins.
