BASE MECHANICS: RECTUS ABDOMINIS

Let’s talk rectus abdominis — a muscle that gets a bit of a bad reputation, when really, it’s got some pretty important jobs.

We often think of the rectus as the “six-pack muscle” and train it with endless crunches. And yes — one of its jobs is to create movement through the trunk. But it’s also incredibly important when resisting movement, managing load and helping control the position of the ribcage and pelvis.

That means we don’t just want to train it by moving the spine. We want to challenge it to create movement AND control movement.

And when you look at where it attaches — from the pubic region all the way up to the ribs and sternum — it makes sense that it can influence how we manage our trunk during everything from Pilates to running, lifting and everyday movement.

So no, we don’t need to be scared of training our “six-pack” muscles.

We just need to train them well.

That’s what Base Mechanics is all about — understanding the body a little better, so we can move it a little better.

What muscle or movement do you want me to break down next? ❤️

Always mapping out the closest bathroom? 🚻

A sudden, difficult-to-delay urge to urinate may be a sign of an overactive bladder—particularly when it’s accompanied by frequent toileting, waking overnight or leaking before you reach the bathroom.

The good news? These symptoms can often improve with the right assessment and treatment.

Pelvic health physiotherapy can help you understand your bladder patterns, retrain urgency and address the pelvic floor, bowel habits and lifestyle factors that may be contributing.

Save this post to practise the urge-deferral technique—and book an appointment if your bladder is beginning to dictate your day.

Please note: This information is general in nature and may not be appropriate for everyone. Bladder symptoms can have different causes, so a professional assessment is recommended for advice and treatment tailored to you.

Doing all your rehab exercises but still feeling stuck?

Stress may be one part of the picture.

Ongoing stress can affect sleep, pain sensitivity, muscle tension, energy and your ability to stay consistent with rehabilitation. This doesn’t mean your pain is “all in your head” — and it doesn’t mean stress is the only cause. It simply means recovery is influenced by more than the injured body part.

You don’t need to remove every stressor to make progress. Sometimes the most helpful step is adjusting your training load, protecting your sleep and creating a rehab plan that fits your current capacity.

Save this for the weeks when recovery feels a little harder than usual.

BASE MECHANICS | Quadratus Lumborum

Small muscle. Big job. Meet your QL.

Sitting deep in the back of your trunk, the quadratus lumborum (QL) connects your pelvis, lumbar spine and lower ribs — putting it in a pretty important position when it comes to controlling your trunk and pelvis.

Your QL works to:
→ Side bend your trunk
→ Assist with extension of the lower back
→ Stabilise the pelvis during walking and single-leg movement
→ Help control your lumbar spine and lower ribs
→ Assist with breathing by helping stabilise the 12th rib

Because of where it sits, the QL can sometimes contribute to lower back pain — but a sore or tight QL doesn’t necessarily mean the muscle itself is the problem.

Sometimes it’s working harder because of what’s happening elsewhere: hip strength, trunk control, movement habits, training load or simply a sudden change in what you’ve been asking your body to do.

The goal isn’t always to stretch the “tight” muscle.
It’s figuring out why it feels like it needs to be tight in the first place.

That’s where a proper assessment comes in.
