"Two-Headed Goat," (2025)

Materials: wood, upholstery foam, worn black socks, glass eyes, recycled reindeer hooves
Dimensions: 65 cm x 95 cm x 42 cm

"For those who are simultaneously asleep and awake, between species, between the complete and the incomplete. A celebration of the non-normative and the unfinished.

It evokes fragmentary subjectivities. It is an attempt to attain shared consolation. A reminder of the possibilities of a new, non-binary existence. These are not new beings, but old forms carrying the shadows of species.

Memories of hooves, fur, tails. They are trying to understand more and more."

From Thisispaper+ Warsaw Guide

What passes between two bodies in an exchange of saliva? Jan Baszak answers at WHOISPOLA in Warsaw with Within and For Each Other, two albino roe deer made of foam, cotton, steel and synthetic saliva.

Jan Baszak makes bodies that should not hold together. His method is to coax soft materials into the likeness of other creatures, hybrids that never settle into a single species. Born in 1994 in Szczecin and now based between Szczecin, Warsaw and Berlin, he works under a banner he calls “abject romanticism,” a practice that in his words affirms “ritual, the crossing and dissolution of bodily boundaries, as well as strangeness and the abject.” The show’s title at WHOISPOLA comes from a line in Part II of Adam Mickiewicz’s Forefathers’ Eve.

While waiting for the official documentation, I’d like to take a moment to say thank you. 🤍

Thank you to everyone who visited "Within And For Each Other" during @warsawgalleryweekend — for the conversations, thoughts, reflections, and for listening to me talk about the exhibition, the body fluid system, Adam Mickiewicz and Halloween. I had so many genuinely touching moments, and I’m very grateful for all of them!

Although this is a solo exhibition, I definitely wasn’t the only person working on it. So, once again, thank you to:

@jagnadomzalska — for your ongoing support, guidance, and for pushing me forward in difficult moments.

@kamilmizgala — for being there from the beginning and helping me develop the concept.

@klara.wozniak — for your technical support and for making the saliva flow freely.

@hartungwojciak — for the exhibition’s beautiful soundtrack. I hope we can make it grow into something bigger!

@biela_magorzata — for the beautiful performance that brought such a special atmosphere to the exhibition.

@sebastian.cichocki — for an amazing text written for the exhibition.

@whoispolagallery — for this opportunity, for supporting my ideas (even the ones involving bodily fluids), for the technical and logistical support, and for making Warsaw Gallery Weekend such a warm and memorable experience!

"Within And For Each Other" is on view until 24 October 2026 at @whoispolagallery

Guided tour with Andrzej Marzec: 4 October 2026.

Once again, thank you to everyone who was part of this🤍

OPENING NEXT WEEK!

JAN BASZAK — WITHIN AND FOR EACH OTHER
as part of @warsawgalleryweekend 2026 at @whoispolagallery

📍 WHOISPOLA GALLERY, Warsaw
Friday, 18 September – Sunday, 20 September
11 AM – 7 PM

“(…) It is a story of interpenetration, moving in multiple directions at once. The boundaries between bodies are indistinct. According to the theory of endosymbiosis, formulated by Lynn Margulis and once regarded as heretical within the scientific community, our bodies are, in part, made up of other beings. Our insides are inhabited by bacteria, fungi, viruses, and archaea, but other species, too, can become a kind of building material for us—something from which parts of our own bodies might be grown. Our mitochondria, for instance, evolved from once free-living bacteria. We absorbed them, and they transformed into us, becoming our organelles.

And yet, we tend to reject foreign bodies. In an anaphylactic reaction, we recognize their presence as foreign—as something to be expelled. As obscene. Our bodies are porous, but so too are the boundaries of scientific taxonomies, of knowledge and ignorance. (…)”

Title: A gentle kiss on a double forehead
Artist: Jan Baszak
Curator: Kamil Mizgala
Duration: 20 Jun ― 06 Sep 2026
Venue: BGSW (Słupsk, Poland)

AI Summary: The exhibition uses leather and sculptural objects to evoke attention, memory, and fragmented identities. The works explore themes of representation, fetishism, and the body-mask relationship, fostering a ritualistic viewer-object connection that resists final interpretation and highlights absence, loss, and the persistence of partial opacity.
