Two albino roe deer joined by synthetic saliva, and a third kept outside the exchange with nothing but a song: at WHOISPOLA in Warsaw, Jan Baszak builds intimacy as a closed circuit and leaves the lament to whoever is left over. The reciprocal pronoun is an odd piece of grammar. It cannot be the subject of a sentence, it refuses to say who gave and who received, and old usage manuals reserve it for pairs. The exhibition’s title, Within and For Each Other, comes from Part II of Adam Mickiewicz’s Forefathers’ Eve, a drama of the village rite in which the living call up the dead and feed them, and the phrase reads less as a quotation than as a diagram: a preposition of interiority, a preposition of offering, hung on a word with room for exactly two. @baszakjan @whoispolagallery 🔗 cult.now

Jan Baszak’s solo exhibition Within And For Each Other, presented as part of Warsaw Gallery Weekend. Relief 04, 2026 Pine wood, upholstery foam, recycled leather, white lacquer 10 x 5 x 75 cm (each of them) Jan Baszak (b. 1994, Szczecin) Graduate of the University of Fine Arts in Poznań (2017) and the Academy of Arts in Szczecin (2019). Recipient of the 2021 Award for the Project Room, Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art, Warsaw. Recipient of the 2024 Visegrad Fund Grant for a residency at AQB, Budapest. Lives and works in Berlin. Baszak explores interspecies relations, viewing animals as equal participants in a shared symbolic world. He is drawn to the exchange of gazes between species—moments that reveal both our limits and the opacity of other beings. His thinking draws on the notion of “Halloween egalitarianism,” a temporary leveling of living and nonliving, human and nonhuman actors, imagining a space where hierarchies dissolve. Materially, Baszak works with discarded, worn objects, seeing in them a capacity to expose what has been repressed. He examines the agency of matter and how objects, fabrics, and organic remnants can tell their own, often more honest, stories. Combining everyday elements with the spiritual and the bodily with the symbolic, he creates melancholic, unsettling worlds. The exhibition is open until 24 October Visit Tuesday–Saturday, 13:00–18:00 Londyńska 13, Warsaw 📷 @bartos2gorka @baszakjan @warsawgalleryweekend

From Thisispaper+ Warsaw Guide What passes between two bodies in an exchange of saliva? Jan Baszak answers at WHOISPOLA in Warsaw with Within and For Each Other, two albino roe deer made of foam, cotton, steel and synthetic saliva. Jan Baszak makes bodies that should not hold together. His method is to coax soft materials into the likeness of other creatures, hybrids that never settle into a single species. Born in 1994 in Szczecin and now based between Szczecin, Warsaw and Berlin, he works under a banner he calls “abject romanticism,” a practice that in his words affirms “ritual, the crossing and dissolution of bodily boundaries, as well as strangeness and the abject.” The show’s title at WHOISPOLA comes from a line in Part II of Adam Mickiewicz’s Forefathers’ Eve. @baszakjan @sebastian.cichocki @whoispolagallery Photography: @bartos2gorka Read more at thisispaper.com

Wystawa trwa do 24 października. 🎥 @_joannabury Kolejne relacje z wystaw Warsaw Gallery Weekend już wkrótce! 🔶 Where does one body begin, and where does another end? Jan Baszak’s solo exhibition at @whoispolagallery revolves around this question. The starting point was a scene of two young roe deer exchanging saliva. For the animals, the gesture has no symbolic meaning; in us, it evokes intimacy, care, disgust and the crossing of boundaries. Soft, deformable textile objects behave like bodies here, speaking of flow, contact and mutual dependence. The artist talks about albino deer from natural history museums, credited with magical qualities, about recycled materials, and about hybrid animals that are never quite what he calls them. On view until 24 October. 🎥 @_joannabury More exhibition reports coming soon.
