I have some big news. Definitively the most exciting news of my career.

I am officially an R41 NIH federally funded researcher.

I’m told only a handful of trauma surgeons in the country have ever had R-funding from the NIH. And my colleague told me not to mention that I made it happen on the first try, with my very first grant application, because “that’s unheard of and will make people upset.” 🤣

I did this over 7 years. Across 3 institutions. NO ONE held my hand. I didn’t have the perfect mentor to guide my path. I didn’t spend years in a lab learning from someone who did it before me. I didn’t go to a medical school with a prestigious history of funding.

But I sought out help. I stayed true to myself and what I was trying to do. And when it felt overwhelming to keep going… I thought about how one day, there might be a life SAVED by what I was trying to do. And a family wouldn’t have to grieve like we grieved my cousin in 2007. And that made me keep going.

Want to do the same? Just be scrappy. Have grit. Be resilient. Remember why you’re doing what you’re doing.

And believe in yourself. (And if you’re girly…. Remember girly girls can do cool science stuff too.)

BIRADS1.
First mammogram at age 40 and got a same-day read of BIRADS1- honestly the best read you can hope for.
My health isn’t perfect (whose is, right?) so I had a nagging inner feeling (as evidenced by my inner monologue post today…) but today I am just going to be grateful for this & that I get 1 more year to not worry about this- and think about the 1 in 8 women who don’t get that luxury. 🩷

Just here to be honest. I don’t like preventative health stuff. In my mind it’s like… a part of medicine where nothing gets BETTER it’s only potentially getting WORSE.

That doesn’t mean I don’t still do it. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t either. You should. The evidence shows that your life can be saved if these things are caught earlier. And it’s true. Scientifically, I know that.

But I just also want you to know that not everything a doctor knows is right, or does because it’s the right thing or the evidence based thing, is because they WANT to and they are HAPPY to. I’m not. It’s not my vibe lol. But two things can be true- we can not enjoy it. And we can do it anyways.

On Wednesdays- we learn! And today I’m teaching you exactly how we have gone from incredibly poor medical students with over a million dollars in combined medical school debt to thriving and doing everything we’ve ever wanted to do in life & the ability to be philanthropic at the same time.

This came from:
1) Being on the same page, as a team, as husband and wife.
2) Combining both immediate fun/happy things (ex: trips to Paris!) with lots of budgetary saves (ex: never paying for shipping & use coupon codes instead lol, & lots of sandwiches and homemade smoothies at work!).
3) Endowment Wealth Manageemnt. They’ve been with us since we were very poor residents and never treated us any differently. They helped kick us in the butt when we needed it (“don’t sell that property!! rent it out instead!”) and encouraged us to live when we felt bad for spending (“Italy sounds amazing! Go for it!”).

To be clear we are still paying off these loans lol! But we are getting closer and closer to done & have so many amazing assets in the interim- very very diversified. Forever grateful to their team. Zero kickbacks; but we always have people asking about this in Doctor / healthcare groups so I wanted to share bc we are their biggest fans. (PS we are always virtual, have never been in same city or even state as Sam, and has always been fine!)

A little girl from a rural area in west Texas, who didn’t get into med school on the first try, wouldn’t have dreamed she’d one day be an associate professor of surgery and a funded NIH researcher looking to improve bleeding control techniques for our military.

Never ever when I was in undergrad or medical school did I see women TALKING ABOUT the fact that they had families, loved their kids, and appreciated their spouses.

One of the biggest reasons I joined social media a long time ago was to normalize working motherhood and being a good mom in the same sentence. They don’t have to be mutually exclusive. by @bbankheadmd
