🏀 Shooting hoops at Willingdon Heights Park got a lot more colourful! ✨

Created by artist Angie Quintanilla Coates @angieqcoates, this mural, titled "Common Ground," was made in collaboration with Buckets & Borders @bucketsandborders and engaged more than 40 youth in its design process.

The North Court design centres on the triangle, the most stable shape in engineering, symbolizing community strength, safety and neighbourly support. Oriented in one direction, the triangles guide people into an inclusive space.

The South Court presents a playful expression, where a semicircle and perspective cubes form a smiling face, signalling a joyful and welcoming place for all. Inspired by suns, blueberries and basketballs, the central circle represents togetherness, continuity and friendship on and off the court.

The wall mural extends this visual language through a geometric mosaic inspired by West Coast landscapes.

Ultimately, each shape reflects a core truth of the community: together, we form a vibrant whole greater than the sum of its parts.

🌟We are thrilled to see Marlene Yuen's @marleneyuen comic created for our "Hak Chu/Pak Chu" brochure included in the Chinese Canadian Museum's @ccmuseumbc current exhibition "Asian Comics: Evolution of an Art Form"! Currently on view, it is the most comprehensive exhibition ever assembled on the rich history and global influence of Asian comics.

This comic was commissioned for the public artwork "Hak Chu/Pak Chu" by Nathan Lee, located on the grounds of Deer Lake Park. It brings together Nathan's writing with Marlene's illustrations and celebrates how a modest and playful object such as the chu game piece can reveal the history of a specific place and become and artwork that lives on into the present day.

View the brochure online or pick up a free copy at the front desk, available in English, Traditional and Simplified Chinese.

🔖 We're taking a look back at a wonderful day meeting community members while making bookmarks with artist Keerat Kaur @_keeratkaur at the City of Lougheed! 📖

It was inspiring to see so many creative bookmark designs come to life alongside Keerat’s playful illustrative stamps, as participants made something special to mark the books they had just checked out from Burnaby Public Library’s Temporary Cameron Branch. We also spent the afternoon chatting about what people have noticed about public art in Burnaby and what could make their experiences with public art even more meaningful. Thank you to Keerat for leading this fun hands-on activity and to everyone who came by and spent some time with us!

Stay tuned for more Public Art events in the future!

Today is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This year marks the tenth anniversary of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) 94 Calls to Action. The recommendations made in this report were meant to address the harmful impacts of residential schools in Canada.

In recognition of this day, we invite you to visit City Hall to view artworks by renowned Indigenous artists whose artworks explore the realities and impacts of residential schools on Indigenous peoples, alongside depictions of Indigenous resurgence that has survived despite colonial harm.

In 1951, after three years of production, English-born Canadian artist Laurence Hyde finished the series of wood engravings that he entitled “Southern Cross,” achieving his dream of publishing the series as a limited-edition book. This “wordless novel” consists of 118 wood engravings and gives a poignant, fictionalized account of the 1946 American military nuclear tests in the Bikini Atoll, Pacific Islands.

Explore this work by Laurence Hyde and more in our current exhibition “RESIST!,” also featuring work by Rawan Hassan روان حسن, Gord Hill and Elizabeth MacKenzie, artists who have used their work to educate and to inspire significant social change.
