Launch of THE REST IS UP TO US
by Curatorium

Join the Curatorium Editorial Collective members for a conversation delving deeper into the collaborative publication, ‘The Rest is Up to Us’, through readings and collective exploration on rest, dreaming, new ways of working, relating and being together.

Imagine a world where all cultural workers can thrive instead of living to survive. What systems of support are in place? What practices activate, provoke, spark this cultural shift? How would you practice rest as an integral element of your everyday life, not just a temporary retreat?

…These are questions at the heart of ‘The Rest is Up to Us’ (2026): a collaborative publication of essays, poetry, artistic interventions and reflections on rest, joy and dreaming fostered through collaborative models that decenter colonial institutional culture and practices. Edited by the Curatorium Editorial Collective (Clare Butcher, Saada El-Akhrass, Myung-Sun Kim, Camille Turner), published by Burnaby Art Gallery, the book traces a collective effort to move towards a seemingly unreachable hammock of rest as a practice of resistance.

Curatorium is an ad-hoc collective that brings together artists, arts workers, and curators of diverse disciplines and practices to expand networks of relationships and care across geographies and time zones.

Enjoyed sketching in the park on a beautiful Saturday with this Urban Skechers Vancouver event outside of Shadbolt centre in Deer Lake Park. It was amazing. They were two instructors. I followed along with Ian to learn from his wisdom of plain air experience, both in Canada and abroad and from his amazing instructional experience,
he was so full of insights and tips and was funny, patient, kind and generous with all his knowledge and letting us see how he created a work and how to find a site and how to make your art your own.
Check him out @iandehoogart
And come out to events held for free and organized by @usk.vancouver

EchoChamber, 2026.
(In-class exercise, acrylic on paper)

When I feel as though I’ve been lured into an echo chamber in my social media feed, I am reminded that art (not just online posts, but actually being in the presence of artwork at a local gallery or exhibition) can speak truth to power and inspire me to keep creating.

This post is a shout out to the #BurnabyArtGallery and their current exhibition (Resist!) featuring indigenous, palestinian and various other artists who have used their work to educate and to inspire significant social change.

I am proud of the BAG’s courage, to call what is taking place what it actually is… a #genocide.

Here’s to a #freepalestine and taking this day to reflect upon #truthandreconciliation for indigenous people in Canada and around the world.

Peace

In this large, masterful green painting, Lyse Lemieux @lyse_lemieux_studio conjures a woman using only lines and collaged strips of fabric; black lines run continuously from one element to the next, tying the fragmented composition together to suggest a torso. The two ink drawings on either side show how she arrived at this: so much figure, evoked with so little.

The striped dress has been a motif in her work since the 1980s. It appears in a collage made in 1987, which was reproduced in the Burnaby Art Gallery @bbyartgallery catalogue for her solo exhibition there, where the cut-and-reassembled stripes already show her inquiry of the body as pattern and form.

On view now at Wil Aballe, Granville Island. @granville_island
