Summer is over and we have a quick summary update on the restoration projects.

First up is a quick montage of some work days with the volunteers on the FM104 Lancaster and the Piasecki H-21 helicopter.

Next up is a very exciting development in the Merlin 224 startup. We have successfully started the engine a few times using ether and it turns over without breaking, which is good. We are now working on getting the newly acquired carburetor tuned up and working for the next stage on having the engine operational.

The remaining photos are snapshots of the restoration work including the wings of the Tiger Moth getting close to complete.

Stay tuned for future news on the Merlin startup as we work on the carb and get propellers ready for it.

*there is no sound on the montage restoration clip but there is for the Merlin 224 running.

#aviation #sharks #history This slide reads “artifact spotlight shark repellent” then ““Shark Chaser” was invented by the US military during WW2 for sailors and pilots flying over the ocean, a dissolvable brick made of chemicals and dyes intended to deter sharks. Despite not being consistently effective, it was used until the 1970s.” There is a picture of a package that says “life jacket shark chaser” (accession number 2013.046.3). For our grand finale of Spotlight Sunday 2026, we present the most famous aircraft in our collection, the Hawaii Mars!

The JRM Martin Mars was built by the Martins Company for the US Military during World War 2. It was the largest flying boat the allies had in production and only seven were ever made.

In 1959 the plane was meant to be sold for scrap, but the newly formed Forest Industries Flying Tankers bought the ships first. This resulted in the planes being converted into firefighting water bombers. It is also when the planes came to British Columbia.

In 2007, the last two surviving planes were sold to Coulson Aviation, and the Hawaii Mars remained operational until 2016. In 2024 Coulson Aviation donated the plane to the BC Aviation Museum where it currently resides.
