A bit different style of “beaching” a floatplane! Unlike what is mostly seen on the west coast with Harbour Air’s aircraft and smaller Cessna types where a half car and hydraulic lifting gear picks the plane up from under and between the floats. This Norseman has 4 sets of wheels fitted at the dock and is pulled out with a tractor. To help steer the rear mounted wheels had steering poles to aid in maneuvering.

Before the legendary Dehavilland Beaver came on scene, the Noorduyn Norseman filled the role as one of the key bush planes back in the late 30s and into the 1940s and onwards.

This is ZMX, One of the very few flying Noorduyn Norseman’s returning to Selkirk, MB yesterday for winter storage after coming down from Red Lake, ON

The immense size and sound of the Philippine Mars was an incredible sight. Pete got right up next to our boat and gave us a great close up of this beautiful machine as they taxied for another test on Sproat Lake.

Been a while since I’ve done some hidden history. Today it’s about the Canadian Saunders ST-27 regional airliner!

Another forgotten Canadian aircraft that only saw 12 airframes produced. The Saunders ST-27 was designed as a conversion from the Dehavilland Heron. Built between 1969-1976 in Gimli, Manitoba the conversion utilized existing Heron fuselages and were stretched and modified. Weather radar was added and the Gypsy Queen piston engines were replaced with the legendary Pratt and Whitney PT6A turbine engines. Interestingly every system onboard was pneumatic. The aircraft’s future was hampered by lack of FAA certification. Funding was also tough for the company with only a few sales to Canadian and one Columbian operator. Bearskin Lake Air Service, Air Atonabee and Voyageur Air are the main few Canadian companies to have flown it. Ultimately the project fell apart after Manitoba rescinded funding in 1976.

The aircraft in these photos is CFLOL (minus slide 2), airframe number 6, built in 1973 I believe. She is currently stored in pieces outside in a years full of other historic Canadian aircraft near St. Andrews airport, just north of Winnipeg.
