Before the month of July ends, Project Bhalakushari would like to celebrate South Asian Heritage Month by honoring the resilience, culture, and history of the ethnic-Nepali Bhutanese community. ❤️ Our story begins in Bhutan, continues through resilience in refugee camps, and lives on in communities around the world. Today, Bhutanese-Nepali families continue to preserve their language, traditions, and culture while building new futures. At Project Bhalakushari, we believe every story matters. Through community-based research, we are learning from the lived experiences of Bhutanese-Nepali older adults and their caregivers to support healthier aging and ensure these voices are heard. This South Asian Heritage Month, we celebrate our heritage, our stories, and our future. 🌏 #SouthAsianHeritageMonth #BhutaneseNepali #ProjectBhalakushari #CommunityBasedResearch #healthyaging by @bccpennsylvania

Chiya Talk: Women Who Shape Generations By BCCPA Pathway to Hope × Bhalakushari This session brought together 15+ community members, mostly women, for an honest conversation about identity beyond the traditional roles women are often expected to embody…like that of a mother, daughter, daughter-in-law, wife, or even goddess. Together, we explored the question: Who are you beyond the labels? We began by asking participants, “What did you want to be when you grew up?” We invited women to reconnect with their childhood dreams, ambitions, and the parts of themselves that often become overshadowed by the responsibilities they carry throughout life. The conversation then explored the relationships that shape a woman’s identity. Participants reflected on their roles discussing their connections with partners, children, parents, and society. We discussed how these relationships can both nurture and sometimes distance from a sense of self. To close, we invited each participant to imagine themselves as a flower. Responses from a few participants: 1. “I am a rose, because despite the worldly layers around me trying to put me down, I am still a beautiful human being.” 2. “I am a white rose, because I am pure no matter what others say about me.” The session ended with a collective art activity. Each woman dipped her hand in paint, pressed it onto a shared canvas, and signed her own name beside her handprint to stand as symbols of individuality, affirming that before she is anyone’s mother, daughter, wife, or caregiver, she is her own person. Thank you for joining us. We look forward to having you at the next Chiya Talk: The Things We Don’t Say (High School Edition). Informational flyer out soon. by @bccpennsylvania

What a great Sunday with the Bhutanese Nepali community in Central PA at Wellness Day! 🎉 Youth, families, and community members came together to create a fun, welcoming, and intergenerational space, playing games, connecting with one another, learning about community resources, and exploring what wellness means in our community. 💙 One of the highlights of the day was hearing advice across generations. We asked youth and adults: What advice would you give your younger or older self? Hear it from them 👆🏽 A big shoutout to @asianrefugeesunited (ARU) and @bccpennsylvania (BCCPA) for organizing this wonderful event! 🙌 Be sure to learn more about ARU’s Project Sahaara and BCCPA’s @projectpathwaytohope and @bhalakushari , which continue to support and strengthen our community. #WellnessDay #CommunityWellness #BhutaneseNepali #CentralPA #IntergenerationalConnection by @bccpennsylvania

SEE YOU AT WELLNESS DAY! 🥳 #bhutanese #nepali #community #aru #wellness by @bccpennsylvania
Mental health in refugee communities is not just about a single traumatic event. It is shaped by everything people go through over time. The research article “Mental Health Among Older Bhutanese With a Refugee Life Experience: A Mixed-Methods Latent Class Analysis Study” focuses on older Bhutanese-Nepali refugees who were forced to leave Bhutan in the 1990s, lived in refugee camps in Nepal for many years, and were later resettled in the United States. Their experiences show that trauma builds across different stages of life, from displacement to long-term hardship to adjusting to a new country. The study found that people experienced different patterns of trauma, and those who went through more continuous or intense experiences had higher levels of PTSD. What stands out, however, is that people did not all respond in the same way. Some found meaning in their experiences, some focused on rebuilding their lives, and some remained silent about what they went through. This is why it matters. Mental health cannot be understood through checklists alone. We have to listen to people’s stories and understand how they make sense of their experiences. Project Bhalakushari builds on this foundation to center Bhutanese-Nepali voices in research and mental health conversations. 📖 Read more: Mental Health Among Older Bhutanese With a Refugee Life Experience (link in our bio) #Bhalakushari #PublicHealth #BhutaneseCommunity #NepaliSpeaking #mentalhealthresearch by @bccpennsylvania
