Proudly representing British Columbia's 56 affiliates and over 5,000 Professional Fire Fighters
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
The BC Professional Fire Fighters' Association extends our deepest condolences to the families, friends and fellow members of those lost at CFB Wainwright in Alberta.

Military and Local fire crews worked together through the night under extremely difficult conditions to protect others. Many in the fire service have also served in the Canadian Armed Forces, and our members hold deep respect and gratitude for all who protect Canada. Our country depends on the women and men of the Canadian Armed Forces. Our rights, our freedoms and our way of life are defended every day by Canadians who answer the call.

Thank you to those who donated blood, and to the paramedics, nurses and doctors in Wainwright, Edmonton, Red Deer and Calgary caring for the injured. by @bcpffa

President Schierling accepted an ice bucket challennge from IAFF DVP Mike Carter’s nomination to help raise funds for ALS research to find a cure.

Brother Kimball Yorston, the President of the Chestermere Professional Firefighters Association, is fighting this terrible disease like a champion.

He nominated IAFF L1763 Delta President Mike McMillan, IAFF L1217 Surrey President Mike Vincent and IAFF L162 friend Neil McMillan to continue the challenge and raise some money.

Here is the link to the fundraiser. Thanks for your donation and stay safe.

British Columbians have two important votes this month.

Municipal general voting day is today, and the provincial election follows on Saturday, October 24. Advance voting for the provincial election runs until October 21.

The decisions made at city hall and in Victoria shape public safety in every community, and the safety and protection of the fire fighters who serve them. Make a plan to vote in both elections.

Find your provincial voting location at elections.bc.ca, and check your local government’s website for municipal voting details. by @bcpffa

Trained. Rested. Ready. 💪

Fire fighting demands ongoing training. With new equipment and new hazards, crews’ skills need to stay sharp for the moment they’re needed. But when departments are short-staffed, there’s often no coverage to train on shift. Members end up training on their days off, or picking up overtime to keep the trucks staffed.

That time comes from somewhere. It comes from family dinners, kids’ games, and the rest fire fighters need to recharge before their next shift.

And as BC’s cities grow, the cost of living climbs too, making it harder for composite departments like Squamish to recruit and keep paid-on-call fire fighters. Fewer paid-on-call members means more of the workload falls on career crews, on top of rising call volumes.

Safe staffing means proper coverage on every shift, so members can train on the job, respond to every call, and still go home to their families rested and ready for the next one.

The BCPFFA stands with our Locals in advocating for safe staffing in every community.

Fully staffed. Every shift. Every call.

Fires don’t wait. Neither should we. 🚒

When fire fighters arrive at a structure fire, they can’t go inside to make a rescue until there are at least four on scene. That’s the “2 in, 2 out” rule set out by NFPA standards and WorkSafeBC: two fire fighters enter, and two stay outside, ready to rescue them if something goes wrong.

Across BC, some Locals operate with a minimum of only three, or sometimes two, fire fighters on shift. When a structure fire comes in, those crews have to wait for off-duty members to get to the hall, gear up and join the call before anyone can go inside. Every one of those minutes counts.

On-duty crews do everything they can from outside, but a fire keeps growing while they wait. Safe staffing means four on shift, every shift, so crews can go in safely and faster. That protects our members, protects people trapped inside, and limits damage to homes and businesses.

Fully staffed. Every shift. Every call.

It's Fire Prevention Week and this year we're focusing on every day charging habits that can help reduce the risk of fires.

No matter what you are charging, know the warning signs of a damaged battery.

October 10th is #WorldMentalHealthDay. This year’s global theme is about lived experience, and in the fire service that means members talking honestly about what the job takes out of them.

There is power in sharing our stories. In members willing to say “I’m not okay” out loud, and crews who listen without judgement. Every time someone tells their story, it gets easier for the next person to tell theirs. That’s what real change looks like.

If you’re struggling, reach out to your peer support team or union leadership. If someone on your crew has changed recently, check in. You’d never let them go into a fire alone. Don’t let them carry this alone either.

Why are firefighters political? Because safety isn’t handed down—it’s fought for.

Every standard we have today was won by off-duty firefighters pushing through bureaucratic resistance and budget cuts to demand accountability from lawmakers.

We don’t play party politics. We stand with candidates who build real relationships with workers and champion vital health, safety, and staffing policy—because our safety is your safety when seconds count.

Stand with public safety. Vote with your firefighters. ✊🗳️🧑‍🚒 taken in Burnaby, British Columbia by @bcpffa

Charge smart! Only use the charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer. Mismatched chargers are the main cause of battery fires.

Today, on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the BC Professional Fire Fighters stand with Survivors, families, and Indigenous communities across the province.

As fire fighters, we serve on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territories of many First Nations. We know trust is built by showing up, listening, and following through. Reconciliation asks the same of us.

Today we wear orange and listen to Indigenous voices. Tomorrow and every day after, we carry that work forward in our halls and our communities.

Today, the @iaffofficial Fallen Fire Fighters Memorial in Colorado Springs brought members from across Canada and the United States together to honour 288 fallen brothers and sisters who gave their lives in the line of duty, standing alongside the families and loved ones who carry their memory forward.

@iaffpresident Edward Kelly spoke to that shared weight: “We honor their lives. Their service. And we honor you, because every one of those 288 members left behind families who loved them. You made sure they never carried the weight of this job alone, and our promise as this union, as their brothers and sisters, is to make sure you never carry the weight of that sacrifice alone.”

288 names. 288 families. One promise, kept year after year. by @bcpffa
