We planted some golden rod in our backyard this year and the pollinators are LOVING it! 🌼🐝

Goldenrod is a vital fall forage source, providing nectar and pollen as our bees prepare for the colder months ahead.

And can we take a moment to appreciate those bright orange pollen saddlebags?! 😍🧡 These girls aren’t coming home empty-handed! by @beachbees_ilm

Some of the sweetest moments in beekeeping have nothing to do with the honey.

Watching these boys learn to respect the bees, stay curious, work hard, and appreciate where their food comes from is what it’s all about. Every hive check is another adventure, another lesson, and another memory we’re lucky to make together.

Here’s to raising kind, curious kids… and maybe the next generation of beekeepers. 💛🍯🐝 by @beachbees_ilm

HONEY HARVEST 2026! DAY ☝️

Bee escapes going on the hives

This task is not for the weak or faint of heart. The honey supers weigh about 50 lbs each, they are glued together with propolis…a sticky resin that the bees use for sealing cracks, and they are full of bees.

I pulled off all the supers and placed a bee escape board (like a one way valve for bees) in between the honey and the brood boxes.

After about 48 hours, most of the bees will have made their way down into the brood boxes and the supers will be mostly free of bees. The honey will be ready to come off the hive to be extracted from the frames.

Repeat this task for 10 more hives, and that’s what today looks like.

It sure does make the honey even sweeter! by @beachbees_ilm

When Keith is off to work - the bees swarm 😂
Came home from a day at the beach with the kiddos to this nice size swarm on our bamboo.

The bucket method didn’t quite work with this one so I ended up moving the new hive just under the bamboo. Then I took the branch they were on and shook them right into their new home to start making some yummy honey! 💛🍯 by @beachbees_ilm

Crimson clover season = happy bees = delicious honey 🍯🌺
The flavor of honey is shaped right here, one tiny flower at a time.

One of Heidi’s first swarms she caught! 🐝

We used to joke that the bees knew when Keith was on shift - they would only swarm then! by @beachbees_ilm
