Happy slime mold Sunday! Posting this pic I took in May of 2018. This was probably my first slime mold picture ever. I made the enormous mistake of posting it to Reddit and asking people what it was. I had no idea at the time. I also had no idea Reddit was such a cesspool.

Since then, so many people have posted this image and claimed it is theirs. I’ve given up trying to stop people. But, I know it’s mine. I know this slime mold was growing at the edge of the garden where I had tossed the remains of the cucumber and pumpkin vines the previous fall, under the big oak we had to take down that summer. I know it’s not mushrooms and it’s not AI and it’s not photoshop.

Enjoy.

It’s weevil Wednesday again!! Yay! Here is a beautiful weevil we spotted on a walk yesterday. The green is beautifully iridescent.

Finally!! I’ve been chasing these butterflies since last week when I spotted them the first time. Then yesterday I stopped to eat a snack while on the path and one landed next to me. This is Mesosemia mevania, the Mevania eyed metalmark.

I have thousands of pix of insects and I think purple is the least common color among all of them. This little leaf beetle surprised me by actually being so very purple and so very small.

These weevils are super common around the house but I adore them and always take their pix. Recently I realized that the scales on their faces and arms, and along the green stripes on their bodies, are sparkly. I was shooting moths one night and saw a weevil on the window sill. It was sparkly! My phone and macro don’t have enough magnification to get clearer images, but scroll through to see the sparkly effect, a video, and an image of the weevil without bright lights on it.

Walking weevil. I was taking a picture and it dropped onto my hand. Had to wait for it to stop playing dead and then I watched it walk around for a moment before putting it back on the tree.

This is Dysschema arema. I’ve only seen it once, at our house. There are only 27 observations on iNaturalist, all here in Colombia. Most around this place, one farther to the north. I see its cousin, D. molesta, quite often. And its caterpillar as well.

Like peas in a pod, literally, and not much bigger. These are teeny tiny frogs in the genus Dendropsophus.

Seen at the butterfly house at the @jardinbotanicoquindio a place worth traveling far to see. Amazing tree and plant collections, birds, bugs, a huge observation tower, and the best personnel ever.
