It’s been ages since I introduced myself to new readers, followers, and general mischief makers. So, here it comes (batten down). My name is Bea Northwick and I write “spooky” love stories. My aim is to deliver books that incorporate romance, horror, mystery, and gothic traditions- to inspire all different types of tingles! My second novel BLACKWICKET— Dark Fantasy Romance x Gothic Horror x Noir with a dash of Jekyll and Hyde — is out now! It follows on the heels of my award winning debut Gothic Romance THE CRUEL DARK (Jane Eyre meets Crimson Peak). Ok ok. Enough marketing. Things you should know: I LOVE an aesthetically pleasing presentation *motions to picture* but 99% of the time, I’m an absolute goblin. A walking ball of anxiety, oscillating optimism, and geekery with a chronically unsettled mind. 🖤 Star Trek TNG and The Princess Bride are two of my favorite things. 🖤 I love carrot cake and black coffee. 🖤 I’ll read horror novels all day but can’t watch a horror film (I just read the Wikipedia page and wish it was a book). 🖤 I’m an 80s aesthetic wh*re, but have an interest in fashion history spanning 1920-1980. 🖤 Dark and light academia? Yes. 🖤 If I couldn’t be an author (and had unlimited money) I’d go back to school for Astrophysics. Ok, that’s enough random information. Thanks for choosing to spend some of your time with me today. I’ll never stop being grateful that this is the work I get to do. That this is the space I get to have all to myself to build dark, bizarre, wonderful worlds full of all the things I love. I’m buckling down from here until the end of the year to work on ALL THE UNFORTUNATE DREAMERS. You’ll still see me around (I’ll probably get the urge to make a ridiculous video or two) but my time is for this book so that it can be everything I hope. IN MY DEFENSE. I am highly caffeinated and no one was available to stop me. In the end, I'm not personally here to write the next great American novel that will withstand the test of time. I’m merely here to connect with people who have felt what I’ve felt and feel what I feel in this moment. I do not have the ego to scrabble for literary immortality, and if people forget my work when I'm no longer around to hawk it, I doubt I'll care much. By then, I will be too dead to mind. However, I care about my peers and the effort and work they put in to their craft. Romance is a billion dollar industry with millions of titles, many of which are MEANINGFUL and WORTHWHILE. Many also THOUGHT PROVOKING if you don't go in with a prejudice that doesn't let you see past the spice or the end of that nose you have tilted so far in the air. If you're a Romance writer or reader, I do love you dearly. We have fun, we have great conversations, and let them all underestimate us at their own peril. Kisses, Bea by @beanorthwick

Wuthering Nights ✨️❤️✨️ The gothic regency ball-themed launch party for Ballad of the Broken Mirror was last night at @blackrosebookshop , and it went so wonderfully! 🥰 Thank you so much to Black Rose for putting on a wonderfully detailed event. We had a Q&A session with @beanorthwick as my amazing conversation partner and a regency dance lesson put on by the amazing @katrinarene11 , plus a gothic regency name generator and a society papers mystery game (both of those I'll be sharing here soon as well, so everyone can participate!). I am so grateful that many of my wonderful author friends could make it out, and that so many new readers came out to check out the event! At the beginning of my career, I had a reviewer state, explicitly, that they thought I was on drugs. I got really upset about it at the time. It seemed like a really unfair thing to say about someone you don’t know. 

Then, over the past years of writing and being on this journey, I laugh about it. That someone read my work and thought “What the fuck is WRONG with her?” Actually makes me feel kind of interesting. 

ANYWAY… the point. 

I pour countless hours of hard work into my books. I enjoy writing them, and by the end of the process I’m proud of what I created. 

None of that changes because someone doesn’t like what I made. 

We’re all different. Not everyone is going to like what you create. That’s life. If we, as authors, spend all of our time thinking about the negative opinions of readers who our books just weren’t right for, the joy will inevitably flicker out.

Did you enjoy writing it? Done. The end. You might be thinking “Bea, if people review my books negatively, no one else will read them!” 

Hog-fucking-wash. I see bestsellers every day with UNDER 3.5 on goodreads. Not everyone who reads reviews the books. No everyone who reads checks or cares about ratings. 

Aside from that - give people some fuckin’ grace. Let them hate your work. That’s their business and their experience. Do you love everything YOU read?

Anyway, I think you have a book to write. So, get on it. Love the shit out this thing that brings you joy, that makes you feel like you. Eventually, if they haven’t already, your people will find you. by @beanorthwick
