This week @afsc_org’s Africa team brought a delegation of civic and faith leaders to the United States to meet with policymakers and religious communities. I am pleased to report they found people in DC to be friendly and welcoming, despite the ugly rhetoric of our national leaders.

It’s genuinely hard to understand and care about problems and conflicts around the world, especially when we have existential challenges here at home. But there is terrible suffering and violence in places like Sudan, Somalia and Ethiopia. The United States could do so much to help - at very little cost. And when we do, we benefit so much in terms of our own reputation and safety and influence. So let’s try to be good friends and neighbors. taken in Capitol Hill by @bearswillattack

Attendance was a bit light for the inaugural Hyattsville Game Day, but many polyhedral dice were rolled, many treacherous monsters were defeated and a good time was had by all. Bidding farewell to Nairobi: got to attend a lovely Quaker church service yesterday; spent time with some of my favorite @afsc_org Kenyan co-workers; and even had time to go downtown by myself and wander around for an afternoon.

Travel tip! In an unfamiliar city, look up the most popular independent bookstore, which will almost always be in an interesting neighborhood. And even if not, you get to visit a bookstore, like the excellent @prestigenbi taken in Nairobi, Kenya by @bearswillattack

We have had a very full week in Nairobi, including a safari to @nairobipark where we saw every kind of charismatic megafauna you can imagine; an afternoon of performances from Kenyan artists who do peacebuilding work (produced by @_liboi_ , an amazing Nairobian singer and musician); a visit with the incredible team at @footprints4c, a local partner that does community and youth organizing in Mathare, an impoverished part of Nairobi with very few services or resources; and even a trip to the famous Kazuri bead factory. taken in Nairobi, Kenya by @bearswillattack

Nairobi is a huge city and doesn’t have public transportation. The main way people get around if they don’t have cars are privately-owned minibuses called matatus. They are everywhere, and the owners attract customers by decorating them with graffiti and paintings of Jesus and football players and what-not. The traffic here is bananas, but you can’t blame the matatu drivers for that. taken in Nairobi, Kenya by @bearswillattack

If you’re an RPG player, it’s a chance to meet other tabletop gamers. If you’re D&D-curious but have never played, several of the game sessions are beginner-friendly. We’ve got about 20 people signed up so far; plenty of room for more.
