A beautiful visit to the tiny, historic and charming town of Thomas, WV. Lots of interesting art from Appalachian artists and crafters - and even a No Kings rally (not pictured).

We went Meyriem’s wedding and it was delightful.

Full video for “Pacifique” by our old band Speedwell, made using footage from our tour with Engine Down by @meredithbragg in 2015 and given to Jon, our drummer, as a wedding gift. We miss you, Jon. We love you, Jon.

“Little Jon”

That’s how he introduced himself to me and everyone else back then. That was 1995, 31 years ago, when we were freshmen at JMU together, a thousand years ago.

An ironic name for a guy with the biggest, loudest opinion on the best song from the best indie artist at any exact moment in time, his sheer volume of personality and generosity, and the best fucking laugh you’ve ever heard.

We found out yesterday we’d lost Jon and I can’t say the words or write the words without filling my eyes with tears. He loved the band we were in together so much and he was seriously one of the best drummers I’ve ever heard, full stop. He was the heart of Speedwell.

More than that though, he was just such a good guy.

I miss him already and I wish I had talked to him more as we both got older.

More than that, I wish he were here so I could tell him all this to his face while he could still hear it.

Hold your loved ones close, tell them that you love them while you can.

I miss you, Jon.

I love you, Jon.

Putting a GoFundMe to support Jon’s wife and young daughter in my bio — if you’re able to contribute, I know they’d appreciate it.

Video with footage from our tour with Engine Down made by Meredith on the occasion of Jon and Laura’s wedding back in 2015. I’ll post the full length version too — it’s pretty great.

Niagara Falls! The long lines, multiple tickets and tacky tourist attractions all recede in the face of the colossal grandeur. My shoes are as wet as shoes can possibly be.

Continuing our goodwill tour of Canada with a visit to the historic St Lawrence Market in Old Toronto. (I had a peameal bacon sandwich, a local specialty, as a form of cultural appreciation.)

For my final post as the MC of Our Hyattsville, I leave you with a selection of our favorite murals from around town. See you around, neighbors!

PS - Our hard-working moderator needs more people to take this handle for the week. Sign up at the link in the bio! You will enjoy it and you will also realize how few interesting things you do in a normal week.

I forgot to do anything interesting today for the Our Hyattsville feed, so here is me in front of my house. Most of the flowers we plant die pretty quick, because I am a neglectful gardener, but I’ve been watering these hanging porch flowers like it’s my main job, and they’re in pretty good shape even after months of limited rain and oppressively hateful temperatures.

We played a home-brewed RPG last night set on a giant floating post-apocalyptic garbage barge (writing by me, art by Elliott). The characters put out a fire at the People’s Free Library and brought an evildoer and his dangerous trash golems to justice. A good time was had by all.

A bookstore is just about my favorite thing and we are blessed with many in DC and thereabouts. I had never been to @wonderlandbookstagram, open for over a year now, so we took a field trip to Bethesda this morning to remedy that. Charming store, helpful staff, neighborhood-sized but a good selection; would recommend. We left with some good picks for everyone.
