The world is a whole lot bigger than the place you grew up!

Apply for that job. Take that trip. Move to that place. You might just find a life you never knew existed(:

A beary cute summer sight in Alaska (from a safe distance) 🐻😊 Photos captured by @_amanda_janes in Katmai National Park with her Sony Alpha 7R V + 300mm F2.8 GM (an excellent high-res pairing for wildlife photography).

“Spending the majority of my time in the ever-changing conditions in Alaska, the Sony A7R V and 300mm f/2.8 have become the setup I rely on the most.
The A7R V provides the resolution and autofocus performance I need to capture special moments in the field, and the Sony 300mm f/2.8 GM delivers incredible image quality, low-light performance, and the mobility I need for long days in the field.” - Amanda. 🙌 🙌

Have you ever wanted to see Alaska’s brown bears up close and personal? Join me for a week in Katmai this July! 🐻

We’ll spend our days on land photographing them, but also learning to slow down and actually watch them — how they communicate, how they interact with each other, and all the little behaviors you get to see when you spend enough time around them.

I want to help you create photographs that capture what it actually FEELS like to be there, and hopefully leave knowing the bears a little differently than you did when you arrived.

There aren’t many places left where you can sit on the ground and watch an apex predator live its life at close range. Katmai is one of them, and I don’t think that experience ever really leaves you.

And you definitely don’t have to be a photographer! A camera is great, but honestly, just getting to sit there and spend time with these bears is pretty dang cool.

July 13–19, 2027. If you want to spend a week out there with us, send me a message or comment “BEARS” and I’ll send you the details!

A good ol’ sibling rivalry!

Brown bears are considered solitary animals, but their relationships are a lot more complicated than that.

These two are old siblings, and watching them wrestle is a good reminder that not every “fight” is actually a fight. Bears play, test boundaries, and communicate with each other in ways that can look pretty intense to us.

And sometimes a fight is exactly what it looks like. The same teeth and claws used during play can be DEADLY in a different situation.

It’s interesting because over time you really start to notice the difference — who knows who, who tolerates who, when something is playful, and when the demeanor actually changes. Some bears are perfectly happy sharing space with each other, and others absolutely cannot stand each other.

And one of my favorite things to watch is when they recognize another bear. Sometimes all it takes is a little lift of the nose, catching their scent, and they know exactly who’s around.

There’s a lot more going on socially with bears than I ever imagined before I started spending so much time watching them.

Amanda Janes’ (@bearwithamanda) wildlife photography is fueled by pure curiosity and a love for the animals she captures. 📸🐻

As a wildlife guide in Alaska, Amanda spends her summers observing coastal brown bears and learning the behaviors, interactions, and small moments that reveal just how complex their lives can be. Photography became a way to document those moments and look even closer.

Her advice to fellow creators is to focus on what makes you feel something rather than chasing a technically perfect image. “Some of my favorite images aren’t the cleanest or most dramatic. They’re the ones that capture a behavior, expression, or tiny moment that tells you something about the animal.”

Through her work, Amanda hopes to encourage a deeper understanding of wildlife, particularly predators that are often viewed through the lens of fear.

She shares, “The more time you spend learning their behavior, the more you see how complex and familiar their world can be. There’s fear, curiosity, trust, play, conflict, and even tenderness.” by @bearwithamanda

And at the end of the rainbow… a couple of fuzzy honeymooners🐻🌈

As we’re getting towards the end of bear season, I can’t help but look back at a few highlights from the stream and in the meadows.
