Amanda Janes’ (@bearwithamanda) wildlife photography is fueled by pure curiosity and a love for the animals she captures. 📸🐻

As a wildlife guide in Alaska, Amanda spends her summers observing coastal brown bears and learning the behaviors, interactions, and small moments that reveal just how complex their lives can be. Photography became a way to document those moments and look even closer.

Her advice to fellow creators is to focus on what makes you feel something rather than chasing a technically perfect image. “Some of my favorite images aren’t the cleanest or most dramatic. They’re the ones that capture a behavior, expression, or tiny moment that tells you something about the animal.”

Through her work, Amanda hopes to encourage a deeper understanding of wildlife, particularly predators that are often viewed through the lens of fear.

She shares, “The more time you spend learning their behavior, the more you see how complex and familiar their world can be. There’s fear, curiosity, trust, play, conflict, and even tenderness.”

Those who know me understand I'm not into the antropomorphy of any animal. "I know this animal" or "we have a connection" is usually a prelude to disaster for both animals and humans.
But, some animals are just cool enough to pull it off.
I heard this bear goes by Fabio, and I get it.I love the paradox, this boy doesn't need to colour his hair or trim his eyebrows, genetics sorted that for him. He's not the kind of Fabio that calls security, he handles business. His competitors wear the scars to prove it. Business is now handled with a quick chat.
Dominant, handsome....and a Ninja level fisherman.
I may be a little jealous.

Huge Coastal brownbear allowed us a ringside seat to his fishing ground, what an experience. We were actually close enough to get a splash or two. Truly priviliged to have these apex predators allow us into their world. Would you stand your ground?

✨NEW EPISODE IS UP!! ✨It was so fun to welcome photographer and guide Amanda Janes to the podcast for Episode 49!

As a guide and deckhand on Le Canard (Alaskan Coastal Excursions), Amanda welcomes guests to their ship-based adventures up and down the Alaska coastline. Her images provide a unique perspective into the daily lives of the Katmai bears, and her intricate knowledge of their communication cues help her capture stunning images of their interactions.

Le Canard team provided such a familial, joyful experience when I stayed there last summer with Pangea Expeditions, and it was a joy to get to talk with Amanda again! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
