⭐️ MEET YOUR DELEGATES: VIAVIA VE’AVE’A ⭐️

Check out the slides to learn more about Viavia and why attending the So’otaga ‘O Uso is important. The last slide contains actions you can take to support Viavia’s fundraising efforts, to travel on behalf of Nuanua Collective as part of U.T.O.P.I.A. Washington’s Delegation. Our Nuanua Collective delegates represent just a handful of the many Sāmoans living in the U.S. diaspora who are eager to reconnect with their island roots this Fall.

💸 TO DONATE DIRECTLY TO VIAVIA:

🔸Visit nuanua.org/donate and select your donation amount. In the message portion be sure to include VIAVIA VE’AVE’A so the funds can go directly to VIAVIA’s fundraising bucket. (Note: All funds that are not indicated for a specific member will be disbursed amongst the delegation and used for the general pot.)
🔹Attend our Fiafia Night and donate on site on Saturday, September 26th from 6pm - 8pm (doors open at 5pm) at Utah Film Center in downtown Salt Lake City. Register now at nuanuafiafia.eventbrite.com. We will be accepting cash and card payments and have a cash exchange available.

They are just one of the delegation of Nuanua Collective members that will be representing Utah and who are fundraising to participate in the So’otaga ‘O Uso in Apia, Sāmoa. It’s important for our supporters to know who is benefitting from their generosity. Your contributions ensure that our members can partake fully in all that the event has to offer and will help cover crucial and necessary expenses.

The So’otaga ‘O Uso, hosted by the Sāmoan Fa’afafine Association, is a historic global gathering that will bring together Fa’afafine, Fa’atama, and LGBTQIA+ Sāmoans to learn from one another, build stronger relationships, and create a more consolidated international Sāmoan community where collective progress and success is the focus all while celebrating and maintaining our unique cultural foundation and identities.

Contact admin@nuanua.org if you have any questions regarding our delegation. taken in Salt Lake City, Utah by @beatby.via

This post is kinda long, so enjoy these photos I took of all the different varieties of hibiscus flowers I found on island🌺

Part 1.💗

Growing up in Tutuila in the early 2000s was a luxury I never knew I had. I only understood that after spending a month back in Pago.

Looking back at 25, I realize how lucky I was to grow up in those golden days of my village. The sound of the ocean, The smell of the umu, Aunties calling from across the yard. Running around barefoot.

Leaving American Samoa at 14, I remember my village feeling vast, like I had left behind an entire world. Coming back years later, it felt smaller not because it had changed, but because I was no longer looking at it with the same young eyes. Still, every road carried a memory. Every familiar corner felt like it was quietly saying, ua? ua e toe fo’i mai?

My nostalgia was at an all time high. I kept catching myself replaying little moments in my head. I wore my wired headphones almost everywhere during that trip. I listened to the songs I used to daydream to before I left “Rude” by MAGIC!, “I See Fire” by Ed Sheeran, “Confetti” by Tori Kelly. I fully immersed myself in the 2010s, trying to recreate the comfort of a life I had forgotten was once so simple and stress free and Maybe it wasn’t the healthiest thing, but I needed it.

Part 2.💗🕊️

I had gone back to American Samoa for my auntys funeral, Mala Ella Manuma Iuliano and for someone who had been so important to me. Somewhere between the music, the heat, and riding in the back of a pickup truck, I found myself remembering the rides we used to take on the aiga bus running her errands. I remembered how she admired my singing.

“Man via how you know all the lyrics to this song?”

It was because my friends and I only had the radio and PBS Kids to keep us entertained when it was too hot outside. She would watch me sing. I could feel her smiling at me, I remember it like i was performing just for her. I felt sm pride in those moments.

Sometimes, when I remember that she is gone, It feels like a flash bomb went off in my body the visceral feeling of forgetting For a moment, Then I remember all over again. It’s disorienting and thats the part by @beatby.via
